SLATER INDEX ENTRIES


James Slater. b.1845. Salterforth Shed.
1851 census gives him as scholar. Stephen Pickles says that in 1864 he was head cut-looker in Mitchell's Mill. He kept hens at Stopes and bought sandstone by the cart load which he crushed and sold for sanding floors. In 1881 he left his brothers and went into partnership with McFarlane Widdup and ran 144 looms at Clough. In 1889 he moved to Salterforth with 216 looms.

1881 census gives him as being 34 years, living on South Street, Barnoldswick. Wife Sara Ann, 24 years. John, 2 years and Ellen 11 year. In 1891 he is living on Philip Street, Barnoldswick, 45 years. Wife Sarah Ann, 34 years, Ellen, 11. John 12. Mary 9. Percy 5. Annie 7.

John Slater born 1806.
1851 census gives him as grocer at 28 Barnoldswick Lane. Wm. Atkinson, p.32, talks about John Slater having a dandy-shop with 14 hand looms on Barlick Lane, so he had 14 weavers plus bobbin winders. He had several horses for conveying goods (twist and cloth?) from Gisburn, Grindleton, Long Preston and Austwick. he took a 25 year lease on intake land belonging to Bracewell Church. This was the land that used to go with Hey Farm, up Lister Well Lane. See Queen Anne's Bounty and Hey Farm. In 1850's he put looms into Mitchell's Mill and in 1867 bought the mill.

SLATER. HENRY 1831
1851 census gives him as 'shop man'. 1871 census gives him as 39 years, address Mitchell Terrace. Cotton spinner and manufacturer. No wife mentioned but it was Eliza, 39. James, 11. Joseph, 9 [This is Joseph that married Ada Whitaker Bracewell.] Elizabeth, 7 years. Isabella, 4. Minnie, 2. 1890 Local Board list of candidates gives his address as Mitchell Terrace. Cotton manufacturer.
1881 census gives address as Mitchell Terrace. Eliza, 49. James 21. Joseph, 19. Elizabeth, 17. Isabella, 14. Minnie 12. Fred Harry, 9years. Barrett 1896 notes his address as 12 Mitchell Terrace. Barrett 1887. Henry and James Slater mentioned as cotton manufacturers of Clough Mill. Was this the same as teh Clough Mill Co referred to in the rate books in 1892. Textile Mercury of 15/04/1886 records Henry Slater, cotton maufacturer as owning one share of £500 in the new company, Long Ing Shed Co. Stephen Pickles referring in mistake to Richard Carr but actually meaning Henry says that he used to put out to places as far afield as Austwick and had his own wagons. He says that James who went to Salterforth was one of his sons.

SLATER. CLAYTON. 1835
1851 census gives him as scholar. 1871 census gives him as living on South Street, 32 years, cotton spinner and manufacturer employing 350 men and landowner. No wife mentioned. John Thomas, 11 years, Ann, 9 years. Samuel, 6years.
William Atkinson says he left for Canada in 1880 taking his machinery with him and this resulted in the closure of the shed at Clough built in 1868. No mention of him or family in 1881/1891 census.

SLATER. RICHARD CARR. 1857
1881 census shows him as living on Mitchell Terrace. No entry in residents for 1891. Barrett 1902 shows him as living at 46 Wellhouse Road. I have a note, from AWOL I think, that he was a pupil at Hague House, Kelbrook which was a private boarding school for boys. Billy Brooks said his nickname was 'bumping'. He was, with his brothers Joseph and Fred Harry a principal of John Slater and Sons at Clough Mill.

SLATER. JOSEPH. 1862
1891 census, has married Ada Whitaker Bracewell and is living at Newfield Edge. He becomes a director of CHSC, see 1900/1902 minutes. At his death in February 1926 he was vice chairman. Was a director, along with Fred Harry and Richard Carr Slater of J Slater and Sons, Clough Mill.

SLATER. ELIZABETH. 1854
1891 census is missing from family list, married? Yes, to Robinson Brooks and living at Park Terrace Cottages, Rainhall Road with Robinson Brooks who she married on 7/12/1889. One side of the Long Ing engine was named Lizzie after her.

SLATER. ISABELLA. 1867
Isabella married her cousin, Edwin. She was a member of the original education committee set up under the Education Act, 1902. Cited in a letter to WR County Council at Wakefield dated 28/04/1903. [LRO, UDBk, 8/1,PCRO p.21.]


SLATER. FRED HARRY. 1870
In 1903 he is noted as Cotton manufacturer of Clough Cottage, Barnoldswick. Chairman of BUDC 1910-1913. Member of the council 1903 to 1918. Billy Brooks says Fred Harry lived at Carr Beck, below Syke on the Horton Road. Fred Harry noted as representative for J Slater and Sons in M/c Exchange directory for 1912. CH26/09/1930. Death notice refers to him and Henry Slater as principals of J Slater and Sons at Clough. Says he was a founding director of the Westfield Shed Co and a past director of the Long Ing Shed Company. He had been in charge of Clough Mill since 1900. John Metcalfe says that the reason the Metcalfe family moved to Barlick from Paythorne was that one of the Metcalfe daughters was a servant at Carr Beck. Billy Brooks talks about Fred Harry's holding in Westfield being bought out by Brooks. [LTP 78/AB/03. page 6.] Billy Brooks says that he was one of the 'old independent' councillors on the Local Board. He was captain of the cricket club as well.

SLATER. ROBERT. 1809
1851 census gives him as Tea dealer, 42, Barnoldswick, Hey. [Mrs Brown's shop on Crow Row?] Alice wife, 46.Robert 17, Ralph 16, William 15, Alice 14, Edward 10, Joseph 9, James 7,Ellen 3 years. Susannah Fort 19,lodger, PLW cotton. Thomas Fort, 22, lodger, PLW cotton. Abraham Heaton, 24, lodger, Labourer.

SLATER. EDWARD. 1841
1851 census notes him as living with Robert Slater and family at the shop on Crow Row. 1871 census notes him as living on Barnoldswick lane, 30 years, Commercial traveller, stationery. 1881 census gives his address as 7 East View Terrace, 40 years. None of the family appear on the 1891 census.
Edward lost an arm in an accident at Wellhouse Mill. William Atkinson suggests this might have been in 1846. He says that 'Ned' Slater started a business selling bibles and that other young men followed in his footsteps. [James Nutter and Edmondson?] Says Edward died in 1885 aged 45 years.


SLATER. JOSEPH. 1842
1881 census notes him as 39 years and living in Salterforth.1881 census notes the following at Salterforth that match Joseph: Ada Alice 14, Christopher R 12, Arthur F, 8, Harriet, 35. Joseph E, ? years. Percival S, 11. Stanley C, 5. Nobody in this entry is noted in the 1891 census. Looks as though they left the district.

SLATER. JAMES. 1844
In Barrett's directory for 1887 and 1902, James Slater is given as Grocer of Castle View, this is the shop at the end of Crow Row which was his father's shop. In 1890 the Local Board Election list of candidates gives his details as Castle View, farmer.

SLATER. SAMUEL. 1847
1871 census he is aged 24 years and living at Herriff Butts with his father John. Trade is accountant. Barrett 1896. A Samuel Slater was secretary to the Barnoldswick Gas and Light Company in 1896. May 1899, mentioned in BUDC letter as secretary of Butts Mill Co. 29/11/1900. Letter to him as secretary of the Long Ing Shed Co. 18/05/1905, letter to Samuel Slater as secretary to the Barnoldswick Room and Power Co at Bankfield Shed. BUDC papers 23/03/1908 several references to Samuel as accountant and secretary to several shed companies including Long Ing, Moss Shed and Butts Mill Company[note that in 1903 when CHSC bought Butts Mill Proctor and Proctor took over this role] 1881 census, 34 years, Barnoldswick Village. 1891 census, 44 years, Chapel Terrace. Samuel Slater noted as Pork Butcher of Church Street in Barrett 1887.Dealer in pots and boots of Frank Street, Barrett 1902. Member of Council 1900-1903.

SLATER. HARTLEY. 1844
1881 census notes him as living on Clough Terrace with Jane, his wife, 36. Edwin, 16. Ellen Whitaker, 17. John, 10. Mary 4 months.
1891 census. All family at same address as 1881, Clough Terrace.
Hartley is mentioned in CHSCMB 25/01/1899 as connected with Slater Brothers (Barnoldswick) Ltd who had room and power at Wellhouse Shed. Slater E&J had 80 looms at Wellhouse, CHSCMB, 18/11/1896. Edwin was the representative for Slater Brothers (Barnoldswick) Ltd.

1891 census. All family at same address as 1881, Clough Terrace. Hartley is mentioned in CHSCMB 25/01/1899 as connected with Slater Brothers (Barnoldswick) Ltd who had room and power at Wellhouse Shed. Slater E&J had 80 looms at Wellhouse, CHSCMB, 18/11/1896. Edwin was the representative for Slater Brothers (Barnoldswick) Ltd. Barrett 1902 notes him as connected to Slater Brothers and living on Rook Street. Slater Brothers are still at Wellhouse in 1903, see CHSCMB 1/07/1903. M/c Royal Exchange Directory 1912 notes Edwin Slater as rep. for Slater Brothers at Wellhouse Mill.

1891 census. All family at same address as 1881, Clough Terrace. Slater E&J had 80 looms at Wellhouse, CHSCMB, 18/11/1896. Edwin was the representative for Slater Brothers (Barnoldswick) Ltd. Barrett 1902 notes him as connected to Slater Brothers and living on Rook Street. Slater Brothers are still at Wellhouse in 1903, see CHSCMB 1/07/1903. M/c Royal Exchange Directory 1912 notes Edwin Slater as rep. for Slater Brothers at Wellhouse Mill.
