Pigot Directory 1834 says Christopher Turner was a tailor in Barlick.

Address given as Didsbury, Manchester. Qualified to act as director in Calf Hall Shed Company, July 1899. (means he had shares). Also 1901.

Turner Elizabeth.
Came from old Earby family. Married Parkinson Inman and had two sons, Fred and Melbourne. Her family kept a butcher’s shop on Water Street. They were still in business in 1950 and her uncle had it. They killed beasts on the premises. Fred still alive aged 93.

1851 census reports him living at Lane Bottom in Barlick with his wife Nancy. He was a labourer she was power loom weaver cotton. Both aged 34.

Noted as living in Bancrofts area in 1851 census with Ann his wife both aged 34. He is labourer she is hand loom weaver wool. Children: Green, son, 17. James, son 15. Bernard, son 13. Joseph, son, 11. Roseanna, daughter, 9. and Mary, daughter 7years. All children said to be mule piecers

Noted as former quarryman aged 54 in 1871 census. Address given as Bancrofts Farm.

Elector of Barlick in 1841 address given as Wadsworth, Halifax. This means he had property in Barlick.

1851 census. Farmer of 40 acres at Folly, Barlick. Aged 42. Wife Mary 43 years. Children: Joseph, S 22, Power Loom Weaver. Ann, D, 20, PLW. Hartley, S 17, PLW. Mary D 12, PLW. John, S 10. Martha, D 8. Edmondson, S 6. Sarah, D, 4. All described as scholars.

See Nutter and turner. Nutter and Turner are mentioned in 1912 Manchester Exchange directory as being in Sough Bridge mill with 252 looms. H G Wilkinson was the Manchester Man. The Nutter in this firm is most likely Rupert Nutter a son of James Nutter. Rupert later went in with Randall Nutter as Nutter Brothers.

Info. From John Turner, May 2003. He thinks this is James Turner. Rene Smith of Earby told him in about 1980 that James Turner had a connection with Grove Mill. James’ mother was Martha Turner, nee Nutter.

1901 Census gives: James Turner as being 27 [born 1874] Living on Aspen Lane and born in Earby. Occupation overlooker. Wife was Martha. She was also 27 years old and was born in Padiham. One child, Cyril born in 1900.

1851 census. Widow living at Jepp Hill, Barlick. Aged 52, widow, tailor and draper. John, S, 25, partner. Robinson, S, 25, partner. Hannah, D, 18. Ann, D, 15. Mary Smith, Mother, 74, annuitant. Benjamin Thornber, 19, apprentice. Benjamin Robinson, nephew, 12, apprentice.

Turner, schoolmaster in Barlick. Lived in Earby , caned Ernie Roberts one day at school about 1925 and he fainted. Levi Turner was brother of James born in 1870. He was schoolmaster at Church School from 1904/05 and retired in 1935/36. He lived in Earby.

Article in Craven Herald 12/08/1932 about the Diamond Jubilee of the Wesleyan Sunday School in Earby. States that the first superintendent of the Wesleyan schools in Earby in about 1850 was Parker Greenwood and William Turner was a teacher. This article also refers to Levi Turner.

Pigot for Barlick 1834 records him as a carrier working from his own house.
