[David Whipp]

My heart goes out to Ian Scothern's family today, after learning he has passed away after his long battle.

When we chatted in recent years, Ian stressed how lucky he was and emphasised the positive.

I'm struggling to think of the positives of his passing away but feel we are the lucky ones to have known someone of such outstanding quality.

For all the different contributions Ian made to our community he will be greatly missed.

Just heard that Anne Kirkbride, Diedre Barlow, from Coronation street has died aged 60 after a short illness. This is a real shock. RIP Anne Kirkbride.

I am reading one of her books at the moment. Picked it up from a market stall a few weeks ago...a massive book that gets so heavy whilst trying to read in bed at night that I only do about 10 pages at a stretch. It's called "Morgan's Run" and I have to say that the first 60 pages or so bored me to tears! ( Sorry Colleen). But I am persevering for now and shall get this thing read before passing it on to you Cazza. I do hope the writing improves because there is little to hold my interest yet.

Only just passed away Stanley. Mr Parsons made 90, not a bad age. Mrs Parsons is in a poor way. Worried about how Jack will manage.

Daphne's father was younger brother to our Great Grandma, David. ( Cazza and Maz)
I went to the farm ( think it was 2005) to meet Eric/Daphne'/Jack.
( Jack recognised me! Said he would know me anywhere....and I left Barlick aged 4. )!!!
Sad to hear Eric passed.

She wore such fetching cardigans with one big button...and always carried her bag of knitting.

Master Decorator Eric Bolton of Barnoldswick has died age 94, Born on Ethel Street in 1920 Eric served his apprenticeship at Simpsons decorators, he married Miss Phyllis Chippendale in 1940 at Nelson. He saw action in North Africa in WW2 with the Blues and Royals. After the War he started his own business on Wellhouse Road, and later every two years a new apprentice was taken in. I was already serving my time with another local man, Mr. Raymond Snape and in 1957 Raymond closed his own business and we both went to Boltons. The time served men there at that time were Trevor Peel, Neil Wellock, Raymond and Gordon Hudson who became my mentor, there was also another apprentice of my age, Barry Smith, others who followed us were Keith Haddaway, Michael Meath, Graham Thompson, Malcolm Foster, Len Poole and John Baird. Eric was a good man to work for if you got it right, woe betide anyone who did not. I last saw him in Asda a couple of years ago shopping with his Daughter in Law, Eric moved to Foulridge after his business interests ended. What skills I gained whilst working for Eric have stood me in good stead, he was a fair man and a good employer. I knew nothing of his death until yesterday when I called my Sister, her first question "did you go to the funeral"? sadly, no.

Mister Peter Booth of Milton Keynes died in the early hours of this morning, he was my Wife's oldest Brother. Peter was born in 1943 at Langcliffe near Settle, the Son of Stanley and Doris Booth, at that time they already had a Daughter, Elizabeth, now Mrs. Elizabeth Borman, Widow. Peter had a younger Brother Michael (Mick) Booth and a younger Sister, Joan, my Wife. The family first moved from Langcliffe to Horton in Ribblesdale where their Father became the local Postman. In 1954 they moved here to Barnoldswick and originally lived on Coates Avenue. Peter went to Barlick Secondary Modern School, and after leaving there he became an apprentice at Tom Parkers joinery works where he was tutored by my Sisters Husband, Mr. Vernon Wood. later he had started his own business with another local Man and as much of their work was carried out in the London area, he moved with his young family to Milton Keynes in 1982. For many years the bulk of his work was carried out in London, mostly on new office blocks, this he was still doing right up to Christmas 2014. Early this year it became clear that he was ill, and just four weeks ago was diagnosed as having pancreatic cancer, at an advanced stage it had already infected his lungs. He was hospitalized immediately for treatment to try and stabilise him, two weeks later he was back at home and awaiting a place in an Hospice. Last week he was returned to hospital having deteriorated and then on Monday this week placed in an Hospice, he died there this morning. Peter had a long interest in Greyhound Racing and had dogs of his own, all are now retired but one of them was with his last visitor before he died. My Wife and her Brother Mick were due to go to see him again tomorrow, his older Sister is on holiday in Teneriffe and has been kept informed. Peter's funeral will probably take place in Milton Keynes, but he has asked that his remains be brought back here and placed in Ghyll Cemetery.

I saw him as a young boy with my dad playing for Derby at Turf Moor. He got sent off for throwing mud at the ref. Remember it like it was yesterday. One of the ‘hard men’ of the game.
