Alice Nutter Statue

Alice Nutter Statue
The newly unveiled statue of Alice Nutter on Blacko Bar Road, Roughlee, was designed by local artist David Palmer, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pendle witch trials at Lancaster in 1612. Alice Nutter, a Catholic gentlewoman of Roughlee, was married to a yeoman farmer. She was executed at Lancaster castle, with other local women, on 20th Aug 1612 after being condemned as a witch. But she was not a witch, her only real crime was that she gave sanctuary to three Roman Catholic priests.
