Re: WE ARE WHAT WE EAT
Stanley, I hope you're not being rude about the Norwegians! Tripps, if you've eaten the seafood sticks then I know why your avatar look strange! I notice the list contains titanium dioxide which seems to get into everything these days, food and non-food, as if it were an inert substance. But it's qu...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Whippy, I think your best solution is two things. 1. Do the best you can to insulate the external shell of your house. If heat leaks out of one bit of your internal structure into another it doesn't matter as long as you do your best to trap it within the whole house shell and stop it escaping to th...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS
At least if you need the CH you've got town gas. We're on oil and desperate for a delivery, with the oil level vanishing below the bottom end of the `sight glass' pipe on the side of the tank. The oil suppliers are overloaded with orders and when we rang them all they would say was "We can't gu...

Re: We all Love A Moan, What Annoyed You Today...
Nothing annoyed me so far today (except the radio news and that's every day!) and I hope it stays that way, but I'm still recovering from everything that annoyed me during the week. We have a lot going on at the moment and one of the issues involves solicitors - we've had to ditch one solicitor beca...

Nolic's right, nothing to get worked up about - in fact it makes a change to see some different pics in place of the avatars! I guess the avatar fuse has blown and Doc needs to insert another one. I like Doc's comment: "Sorry about all this folks, I promise it can only get better" - I thin...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS
Do folk still use `any road' as an alternative for `anyway', `whatever' (woteva in modern teenage argot). Example: You and a friend are trying to agree a time to meet, and you say "Any road, I'll see you this evening".

When I was a student in Liverpool I was warned about the meaning of nudger so that I wouldn't get into trouble! Later, working for Rank Hovis McDougall, I learnt how variable the composition and form of bread products was throughout the UK, let alone globally. When the labs developed new products th...

Great jokes Cath, Stanley.
On this snowy morning one of today's newspapers carries a cartoon showing a weather forecast that has the warning:
"Readers should stay indoors to avoid endless talk of Harry Redknapp."

Vitamin D...it's the other way around - you need vitamin D in order to absorb calcium efficiently. Lack of calcium is a big problem now due to not eating dairy foods in the quantities that we used to do. For an explanation and lists of calcium-rich foods see this page from the US National Institutes...

Whippy, can you put the usual foam tube insulation on your CH pipes? Or failing that, use a can of spray foam insulation? With the loft etc, there are systems for injecting or spraying foam into the gap between two layers or as a thick coating on the underside of a roof. As for Russia deliberately m...

In my first post in the new Winged Heroes thread I've now got the postcard image temporarily in as both a Gallery pic (first) and then as an attachment (second). The attachment pic has the very neat property of being clickable, bringing up a larger image and this seems to be available by default (no...

I suppose my suggestion of having a list with all topics wouldn't work because there would be so many and it would dilute out the main ones too much. Topics like What Grabbed Your Attention would be mixed up with topics in Local Retailers, Job Vacancies and the like.
