Re: Old fashioned clean jokes

When I see a sudden flurry of jokes like these from Barlickers it makes me think of Barlick being in one of those `snowstorm' ornaments that someone has just shaken up and all the snowflakes are floating down.

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY. TRIPPS ORIGINAL

Florence Green, who was the oldest living veteran of World War 1 and had been in the Women's Royal Air Force in 1918, died earlier this month, just short of her 111th birthday. Asked what it was like to be 110, she replied: "Not much different from 109".

Re: Winged Heroes

Good guess Ian. Stanley cheated but I'm not sure the linked page explains the name Blackfish. The Swordfish was originally built by Fairey and went into service in 1936, but in about 1942 production was transferred to Blackburn Aircraft Limited at Sherburn-in-Elmet. These Blackburn aircraft were kno...

Re: I lost your Avatar - Sorry

Easily done Doc, don't worry - in fact I quite liked the big Smilies! Whippy pointed me to this thread and I've only just got back to OG, but I'm a happy mollusc again! I still find it a bit tricky following all the threads I want and would prefer somewhere to have a simple list of all threads (in o...

It's OK Heather, we are watching and enjoying your posts, even when they are misattributed - everyone knows it was William Shakespeare of Stratford and not some pasta-eating Italian.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Nice one Nolic. It reminds me of my early days at Boots Chemists training to be a dispenser; one of the tasks to learn then was how to make suppositories. The main component apart from the drug was cocoa butter because it melts at body temperature. The property that gives chocolate its characteristi...

Re: Minor glitches

He's doing a marvellous job and evidence is the fact that this thread is called `Minor Glitches' and not `Major Glitches'! It's only a tidying up job thanks to the Chief Stoker's efforts. Thanks Doc! Oooh, I've just noticed, some of us (me, Nolic and Stanley for example) have suddenly got sm...

Re: Minor glitches

Doc, thanks for explaining about the pages opening in new tabs etc. Your esxamples do as you state in my Firefox10.0/Ubuntu. That arrangement sounds OK, with internal in the same tab and external in a new tab. I must have been using internal links when I noticed it was using the same tab. I'm glad t...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

There was a farmer's field behind the house were I spent my childhood and everyone called it `Johnny's Meadow' but I don't recall John being the name of the farmer. I wonder if it had some other meaning or was just used to denote any field close to home?

Re: TIZER'S SCIENCE NEWS

Blasts of light are being used by scientists at Stanford University, USA, to weld together tiny meshes of wire that could have new electronics and solar applications. Science Daily writes: "One area of intensive research at the nanoscale is the creation of electrically conductive meshes made of...

Above, I wrote "I must look out the picture I found of an alternative way for Stanley to take his cod liver oil!" Now here it is, taken from Picture Postcard Monthly which as you know is one of my favourite magazines. The January 2012 issue has a whole article on postcards about cod liver ...

Re: Is it just me ....

Nolic, thanks for the explanation. The power of the Internet, it can bring a magical source of information, facts and data to people like me and you but it is also powerful in these horrible ways. Bullying went on when I was a child and I suffered some of it, but it was out in the open and you knew ...

Re: Winged Heroes

The film looks like stirring stuff Nolic. Was that an Me262 jet fighter that I saw depicted in the video? You couldn't show those in the old days unless you had some old film or a few Airfix kits! Computer graphics open up all sorts of possibilities. I have a book by a British WW2 test pilot who bro...

Re: BEWARE! THE BANKS ARE OUT TO GET YOU!

On the Energy thread I referred to the `direct debit trick' and said I would explain here. We all know how much effort the utility companies and others have put into pressurising us to pay by direct debit. I always try to avoid it because it's prone to errors which can drag out for ages and be diffi...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

We don't chase better deals on energy supply, partly because we are not on gas and the companies aren't interested in attracting electricity-only customers, and also if we changed we would get caught by the direct debit trick which we avoid like the plague. The present leccy company has been OK and ...

Re: Is it just me ....

Well said Nolic - but I'm naive as usual...what's `relational bullying', is it being nasty to your little brother?

Stanley, says "I remember Barnoldswick.com in 1984" - did Barlick beat Tim Berners Lee to inventing the Web? I always guessed you were ahead of the rest of us!

Yes, sausage makers! Well done Panny and Stanley. To be more precise they are `Poussoirs de chair a saucisse' (i.e. French sausage makers if you speaka da lingo) and they reside in the Musee de l'Alimentation in Vevey, Switzerland (so perhaps Swiss sausage makers) and are described as 18th-19th Cent...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Yes, I heard Lisa Jardine, always worth listening to her. The technology of instant communication has led to a proliferation of relatively worthless messages and data claiming to be `information'. How did we ever get by with so little communication in the past! It was often better not to know what w...

Re: Is it just me ....

For my two-penneth, I agree with Nolic, youngsters follow fashion and will go where their pals go, not where we suggest or try to guide them. The nearest to a viable proposition would be to offer one or a group the chance to have space and do what they like with it...but what they like might not sui...

Doc, I can put web link addresses into posts OK but how do I set them to open in a new tab in the user's browser? Winged Heroes

On 21st December 2007 I started a thread called `Winged Heroes' and posted in it my first picture on the OGFB forums. The thread was archived when this new site replaced the old one and it had received 369 replies in 25 pages and had 41364 views. My intention was to create a place for discussion of ...

Nothing against technology itself, Pluggy. After all, most of technology is nothing to do with mobile phones and BlackBerrys, but I'm not against them either. It's more to do with the way that these things are used that gets to me, ears glued to the mobile phone, the Blackberry demanding and getting...
