Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Pluggy, thanks for that Nationwide link, it's very fast and much better than the one that Mrs Tiz has been using. You've made her day! :cool4: Ubuntu has installed Firefox 10 and I'm still finding odd things different. I sometimes use `Page Source' to see code in web pages and I'm sure it used to be...

Re: HELP REQUIRED
Any chance of getting the incident related in the local newspaper? The more publicity the more chance of somebody knowing who it was and letting you know, or of the driver being shamed into admission. Perhaps the charity shop would put a notice in their window asking for information, and any other s...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS
There's an interesting discussion of Dick's hatband on this site ( LINK ) but no conclusion about the origin. `Up the creek' can also, of course, be heard as `Up shit creek', regarded as impolite nowadays but it's origin is simply that centuries ago most towns had rivers or streams were most of the ...

The major shareholders, the pension funds, are managed by people who make the same big salaries and bonuses as do the bankers, so they aren't going to upset the apple cart.

Catty, perhaps accumulating all those numbers appeals to the puzzle fanatics who enjoy OGFB? I'll continue being old-fashioned and and using the word `thanks'. And instead of pressing buttons to thank Doc I pay my subs to support his wonderful endeavours (well Mrs Tiz pays, if I'm honest!).

Well Catty, I suppose it's a bit like not using pesticides in my garden so as not to wipe out the little bugs...but then the little bugs aren't responsible for lousy TV programmes, Ipads, BlackBerrys, mobile phones, bank bonuses, Fred Goodwin, Terry was-is-name the footballer, Adolf Hitler....

Pluggy, the self-build fraternity are tending to compare the PV/FiT with an annuity rather than an interest-bearing account because you don't get your capital back with a FiT. I notice the comments about `saving the planet' but (as James Lovelock points out) the planet doesn't need saving, climate c...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS
I used the phrase `dickey ticker' and wondered why `dickey'? The Collins dictionary says that in this type of usage it's thought to derive from `As queer as Dick's hatband'. Now then, what on earth does that mean?

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
What grabbed my attention is all these `Has thanked' and `Been thanked' numbers showing up under members' avatars - at least all except Sally above and me. Sally has the excuse of only just joining, but I've been loafing here for yonks. The truth is I just can't get motivated about that kind of box ...

Re: BEWARE! THE BANKS ARE OUT TO GET YOU!
At least RBS chairman Sir Philip Hampton has admitted that bankers are being paid too much. He'd better check under his car in case his former mates want to remove him from the argument! Business writers in The Times have several times commented that bankers' so-called `compensation packages' are so...

I'm pleased to say the spellchecker has been working for me in Firefox on Ubuntu Linux and it's brilliant to have one because I'm always making typos when I write in forums but I don't like posting spelling mistakes. Once an editor, always an editor! Which reminds me, I must try out this new-fangled...

...or maybe it's just a journalist doorstepping him on a bad day when his heating system has broken down and he doesn't need yet another problem! And it's pretty difficult to be impartial when you're having to deal with bankers who seem to live on another planet.

Presumably it must be a genetic difference Maz, with a reduced ability to convert the precursor compounds to vitamin D, or a reduced ability to absorb it from the diet.

Re: TIZER'S SCIENCE NEWS
A recent `New Scientist' article has described how a very big earthquake, around 8 to 9 on the Richter scale, hit what is now the USA almost exactly 200 years ago but we don't hear much about it because, of course, there were few people there to record its effects. It ran from the Gulf of Mexico nor...

Doc, thanks for the titles on the page tabs. I can see what Whyperion is missing - the old OG tabs also had a little icon specific to OG and you knew which were OG tabs. Now I see a little dotted box instead.

Doc, thanks, that's a very useful trick that I hadn't known about and will make it much easier to direct people to past posts. Now then, here's another thing. I'm using Firefox 9.0.1 on Ubuntu Linux and find that tabs are titled differently compared with the old OG site. On this new site, every OG t...
