Re: Wildlife Corner
In our garden we put in lots of plants to attract insects but the one that the bees love most is marjoram. We have a large patch and it's heaving with bees in the sunny weather. When we walk past it they ignore us! Marjoram survives winter in Somerset - does it do that in Barlick now that the climat...

Re: TIZER'S SCIENCE NEWS
It's hard to avoid the conclusion that the human race is accelerating towards doom. Climate change due to CO2 was predicted in the 1800s and accepted by physicists as happening as early as the 1970s. I've known about it since then and seen all the evidence accumulating since. And yet most of the pol...

Re: TIZER'S SCIENCE NEWS
I favour the view of the late Professor James Lovelock who concluded that humans would gradually become cyborgs - robots with human brains. Think about it. We already see many humans who have damaged or severed body parts replaced by mechanical ones made of metals, plastics composites etc. Lots of u...

Re: WE ARE WHAT WE EAT
That's a good and useful article. It doesn't deal with the history of knowledge of the fibre so I've added this link below to an article about Denis Burkitt. It includes my favourite story of the role of Surgeon Captain Peter Cleave who was medical officer on the battleship King George V in WW2. Bur...

Re: TIZER'S SCIENCE NEWS
Sorry Cathy, my scientific knowledge doesn't stretch to calculating the final age of the Universe. I'll just point out that the article has lots of ifs, buts and cop-outs! If Donald Trump has anything to do with it the end date will be forever changing!

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Which software applications are you referring to. There's more than one dictionary. If it's Thunderbird then open it and click on Tools | Edit | Settings | Composition and tick English UK and unclick English US. I've just checked Janet's 22.04 and her Thunderbird was already on UK English without he...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Yes, it does work too. It's not really inconvenient, just a bit strange. It's the same on Janet's PC and she's on the 22.04 like Stanley. When I have time I'll probably google to see if if it's the same for other users. I'm on full-time post-holiday gardening at the moment to get as much done as pos...

Re: Seen in the News
It's diabolical... I see the latest plan from the IDF is to move all surviving Palestinians to a compound in the South of the Gaza strip. What events does that remind us of from not too distant history? `Israeli plan for forced transfer of Gaza’s population ‘a blueprint for crimes against humanity: ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Does CTRL not come in to play with the + and - for enlarge & decrease? In my previous versions of Ubuntu I could increase and decrease the size of images by simply clicking the two keys in the top row of my keyboard without having to hold down any other key. The hyphen/underline (- _) key to de...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Don't hesitate to ask for help if you can't sort it yourself. I've found minor changes that stumped me at first until I found they were really quite simple. Things like being unable to find how to shut an app and then realising I was just looking in the wrong place. On my v.24.04 when I want to enla...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Congratulations and well done! :good: And yes, it is faster. You're now fully secure again. have a look in the installed apps to see if there's anything else you need or fancy trying out. To do so, click on the show apps icon in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen. There are two pages, just c...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Later...Janet's PC is now upgraded successfully to Ubuntu 22.04. Excluding the initial safety backup to hard disk it took about one hour. You can follow the procedure for the previous upgrade for which you have my notes. Once the process is running it's continuous except for a couple of stops to whe...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Stanley, I'm back in the hutch after a hot, dry and sunny week in Charmouth. Amazing weather for this early in the year! If you go ahead with the Ubuntu update I suggest you only do the one step which will take you from your present 20.04 to 22.04. I'm going to be doing that on Janet's PC. It's much...

I've just sent it to you by email. I changed 20.04 to 22.04, otherwise the process is the same as last time.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Stanley, Ubuntu version 20.04, which you and I are using, has now ended its support updates and you need to upgrade to v.22.04. I've done mine this morning using exactly the same steps we used for upgrading 18.04 to 20.04. You probably still have the document I sent you last time detailing how to do...

A warning. Since I wrote this Mrs Tiz pointed out that the Salvia variety I refer to will probably be classed as too tender for growing in the Pennines.
