Hi Stanley, Many thanks for that and sorry for not replying sooner. It's the 'quarter share' bit amongst others that intrigues me. Just signed up again from the old forum. In Gladys Whittaker's book 'Roughlee Hall Fact and Fiction' on page 24 it mentions a dower in the CCR in 1561 between Alice Nutter and her husband Richard.
