Re: Shed Matters 3

The 10H is coming along. Next job is to drill the valve chest, cover and cylinder to match. The cylinder holes will be tapped 7BA as per the drawing. Then there is the flywheel to make and I will be able to clean up all the cast iron dust. I have used the workshop vacuum cleaner as I went along but ...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Stanley, I see you wear the blue gloves, are they better than the simple latex gloves? Hands take quite a bashing from oil and swarf. Cast iron dust seems to stick in the skin even after a good soapy wash. Some good taps and a die arrived this morning. 4F1F7381-196E-4DBB-AEE4-5D82CA8F6061.jpeg I was...

Re: Shed Matters 3

How about a horizontal engine next time Stanley? I don’t have many horizontals in my collection which is the reason for building the 10H.

Re: Shed Matters 3

A cracking job Stanley, it was a good thing you didn’t have that rag any closer. I assume, of course, that even though you didn’t expect it to run that well that your fingers were well out of the way😃. That it where the university of life pays off. There are a lot of very pretty engines out there to...

Re: Shed Matters 3

It is bread and butter stuff Stanley but that is where the real work is and the model is made or spoilt. I cleaned up the box bed for the 10H but when I mated the main casting to it there was considerable rocking. I referred to Harold Hall's notes on making the 10 series engines. He reported that hi...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I have moved the locomotive chassis to the back of the bench whilst I paint small parts. The coach enamel takes 24hours to dry for handling and much longer to harden. So while I am waiting I have got out a casting set bought a few years back. The unexpected arrival of the locomotive derailed my plan...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Nice progress Stanley, I have been doing a bit of test fitting myself as well as searching boxes for parts. This locomotive came to me in bits and the drawings are not very detailed which doesn’t help. Today I have ordered some 8BA and 10BA screws from ekp supplies in Devon. I also converted the hea...

Re: Shed Matters 3

You asked about the gas torch Stanley, it is made by Clarke Tools. There are 3 interchangeable burners of various sizes. I was given a 6Kg Calor propane bottle many years ago and I am still using the first fill of gas. I also have a Silverline burner which has several nozzles of different shapes. Th...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I wouldn’t say this was beyond you Stanley. This is only a rebuild though I am upgrading some parts as I go. At the current rate of working I could never envisage building a complete steam locomotive, like you, I will stick to stationary engines. I did get the first manifold ready to silver solder t...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I’ve have finished the second axle pump and got the twin pumps mounted back in the frames. Next job is to plumb them in. I think I will make a couple of small manifolds to get the 2 inlet and outlet pipes joined into one.

Re: Shed Matters 3

Batteries predominantly fail on a really cold day. It will be all those chemicals slowing down at low temperature. Today I noticed that the workshop clock has stopped.

Re: Shed Matters 3

It’s all progress Stanley, good to see. I am hoping that when we get as far as steam testing with the Duchess that the regulator will close enough to prevent creep. It is a lovely model, designed by Clarksons of York who provided drawings and castings. It was originally built by a member of the Roch...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I have also been doing a bit of painting. After finishing the little turbine before starting to decorate the study I put the Duchess chassis back on the bench and I did remember to empty the lubricator tank before turning it over :good: . It is clamped into a swivel stand at each end. The boiler cla...

It is also so nice to see all that hard work fit together. However much confidence we have there is always that thought that it won’t all line up because we missed something.😎

Re: Shed Matters 3

I had a pot of Taptite which I finished last year. It was the pot that I was using up until the Company shut our workshop in 1992. Rather than put it in the skip it went in my car boot and ended up at home. I now have some Rocol from a workshop clearance. I too doubt that I will ever have to buy any...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Do you lock the rod into the tapped hole in the piston, Stanley? Perhaps it is just screwed up tight. I have known a few model locomotives have a piston come loose. It will then hit the end cover of course.

Re: Shed Matters 3

You were correct about the bolt heads, Stanley. I even had to skim the knurling off for a better fit.
Trial assembly of the little turbine this afternoon. It spins well on 15psi. Next Action is to paint It, I wonder what colour?

Re: Shed Matters 3

I bought parts of this setup 3 or 4 years ago when we ran the Manchester Model Engineering Exhibition. One of the exhibitors did me a very good deal though when I came to put it all together I found that I needed another adaptor plate and that had to be machined and drilled to fit. What I had Previo...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I find the exchange of tips very helpful, thanks everyone. I too only spent a short time in the workshop today Making swarf as I reduced the turbine rotor casting to size. Cleaning up the aluminium swarf after I wondered if aluminium swarf could be a fire hazard. Of course fresh cut aluminium gets c...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Most of my time in the workshop has been spent making the drain cock. Whilst the lathe tool was set over 6deg. after machining the valve core I made a taper reamer to match. I used that to cut the taper in the body and got a nice fit. I could have bought a commercial drain cock but this one was incl...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Not much to report from Rochdale, Stanley. I started the drain cock but slipped up putting the chamfer on the valve core so may start again later today. My M5 HSS die arrived so I can also continue with the main shaft. That delay was following the realisation that I only had a carbon steel die. OK f...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Is that Avo meter a robust army model, Stanley? I have only seen leather cases. Like you, I check the battery in mine now and again. Mine takes 2 batteries, a high voltage one for the high resistance range and an ordinary single cell for the two lower resistance ranges. The high, 22.5 I think, volta...
