Re: Shed Matters 3

Coming along nicely Stanley. I haven't done much on the trailer recently, what with hospital appointments but those are over for the time being. I did get diverted onto our multi fuel stove when the front glass cracked. A replacement glass was relatively easy to buy but then 3 of the 4 fixings studs...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Coming along nicely Stanley. I haven't been in the workshop so much recently, too many clinic appointments. Today's time is 3:15 so I did manage a bit on the trailer for the Clayton Steam wagon. I pressed the rubber treads onto the rims after deciding not to glue them. They are a good tight fit so i...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Hi Ian, I didn't realise he was a radio amateur.Keith dealt with him and took the wagon to show him when it was finished. Is he still active on the air? I don't do anything these days, I am G4OAC. The equipment languishes in a cupboard. Does anyone want any components for home brewing?

Re: Shed Matters 3

Whilst Stanley has his breakfast I'll update you on my 2" scale Clayton steam wagon. It was started some 30 years ago by Geoff Peel who worked at Rolls in Barlick. Keith Sharp completed it and now it resides in my workshop. The steam certificate has just about expired so I must get it retested ...

It's coming along well, Stanley. Is there any seal or packing in those glands?

Re: Shed Matters 3

That is looking very good, Stanley. The weather forecast here in Rochdale says it will be dry on Sunday but then we are further south and over a couple of hills😃☔️

Re: Shed Matters 3

Yes, I think those will last a long time as you say. I currently have some fibre or hard rubber lined jaws. The previous set lasted at least 15 years but aluminium is good if, like you, there is some to hand.😃

Re: Shed Matters 3

Those jaws are almost too good to use Stanley. How long did the old ones last? I’ll look at large pieces of aluminium now as potential vice jaws not just oddments😎

Re: Shed Matters 3

Sounds like they are still getting cast iron from the Tirpitz🤣. Seriously though I do get the impression that recent castings from Stuart have been cooled too fast.

Re: Shed Matters 3

Very nice looking model, Stanley. It might have been a bit easier to work on had it been larger but Percy Verance got there in the end.

Re: Shed Matters 3

I’m not sure about Kenyons, Stanley. I wonder if they changed the name to differentiate from Kennions in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire who are still going.

Which supplier did you use for the 6BA studding and nuts Stanley? I have a couple that I use, both quite good at delivery.

Coming along nicely, Stanley. As you say it is better to go with the flow rather than fight it. Perhaps make a pair another time😎

Re: Shed Matters 3

Some used to say to get your ducks all in a row before starting. I prefer the saying of one of my work mates who always said to set out your stall before opening. A good build always benefits from a bit of thought first. Today I was deflected though still in the garage and workshop. I am going to do...

Re: Shed Matters 3

It was a bit of a challenge to get them looking the same. I finished them off working under the bench magnifier. If they look about right magnified nobody will see the difference😎.

Re: Shed Matters 3

Yesterday I got the blanks for the generator lifting eyes roughed out. 89C99C59-4954-4232-A8BF-E29B4EAEB6AF.jpeg So this morning I had a lot of hand filing to do to get a nice rounded finish in all directions. 4A29BD97-8B96-4670-A4FF-42E840721CBB.jpeg A bit fiddly, the screw threads are 3mm. These s...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Stanley, perhaps you should build the next one opposite hand and put them on a base together as a twin. There is just the downside that it means not building to drawing and errors could ensue🤓

Re: Shed Matters 3

9.7mm sounds like a bit over 3/8” in christian units. The bit over would be 6.8thou” by my quick calculation. No wonder it caused a problem. Nice looking engine, Stanley.

Re: Shed Matters 3

That engine is coming along well, Stanley. I am always interested in how you tackle the machining and overcome the problems. Today I did a trial assembly of the multipole generator. I too had to file some holes to get the fit right. In my case I needed to move the bearings over slightly to centre th...

Re: Shed Matters 3

My mill is about 15 years old so quite new compared to many. It is of Chinese manufacture and was sold under a number of brand names with various small differences. Generically it is known as an X2. It has been highly modified. Initially it was supplied with a 2 speed gear drive which was extremely ...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Nice steady progress Stanley. Today I set the mill up to put slots in the rotor to mount the magnets. This generator is like the big machines that I knew at work. The magnetic field rotates whilst the windings are static. The neodymium magnets take a bit of handling. They are very powerful and the m...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Ah yes, upside down lathe means the swarf just falls out! Or perhaps it is just ipad photography striking again. I did get some time later to connect the stator coils together. They go in a plastic insert which slides into the housing. You will see that this is a 12 pole machine. The magnets fit in ...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Not a lot of progress here though it is good to see OGFB back. I did get the generator rotor centred and bored then made a mandrel so it can be held to skim and size.
