You've got it Graham. Balata, also called Gutta Balata, hard rubber-like material made by drying the milky juice produced principally by the bully tree (species Manilkara bidentata) of Guyana and the West Indies. I can't take the credit - Chalk it up to t'Internet not me! The power of search engine...

Re: LAYCOCK'S BUSES
I loved travelling from Skipton up to Ingleton on the orange and black Pennine buses, often stopping on the way to drop off parcels at pre-arranged remote places. It just seemed such a lovely friendly service. That's my memory of the service.

Re: THE FLATLEY DRYER
What threw me when I first started on OG was that I'd been used to a simpler way of quoting on other forums. In the post you wanted to quote from you just highlighted the desired bit of text and pressed the quote button. The Post a Reply box then opened with that bit of text already in quotes. That...

I don’t even know how to use the Quote thingy. If you just want to quote a section of the post as I have here. Open a new post, scroll back to the one you want to quote from, highlight the section of text you want then click the quote icon at the top of the post. That will append the quote correctl...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Could this be it? Never heard of it before but I found this on the web: Balata belts They are similar to the rubber belt but stronger than rubber belt. In this type, balata gum is used instead of rubber. Balata belt is waterproof and has high resistance to acidic, alkaline materials, so they are use...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I can only think that it must be the creeper vine things that hang down (ligands - is that the right word?). Perhaps they give a long fibre when processed that has higher strength in conveyor belting. Only guessing. I was thinking of rubber conveyor belting when I suggested a rubber tree.

You could have used that image for the next mystery object. Or would it have been obvious what it is to the engineers?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I've been educating myself on the internet. A Warren Truss bridge. Funnily enough I see this design every day because the horizontal load-bearing arm on tower cranes utilise the same construction for high strength to weight ratio, and there are many tower cranes here. You learn something new every d...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Thanks for the sources. I'm not a climate change denier, I accept that climate change is happening and always has. I say the activities of an extra 5 billion population in the last 100 years is responsible for it. So what are we going to do? Going back to the glory days of 1942 might be a start but ...

Here's a good one from that sensationalist rag, The Sun, today, 29th July:
Bookies have slashed the odds on this month [it's JULY] being the wettest August on record to just 2-1.
You couldn't make it up!

I'm still waiting for an explanation of why we cant have a socialist government in the UK. But it's perfectly acceptable in China and beloved by the immigrant Tyke.
