Re: Hemp Butts Cottages

Again, many thanks to you all for your information and photographs. I'm very surprised that my great, great grandfather's house has survived. My next move will be to come over to have a look as soon as I'm able.

Thanks. John Brown

Stanley, thank you for this useful information. I don't expect you know of any photographs of the cottages, do you? Re: Hemp Butts Cottages

It seems that hemp butts were fields where hemp was grown, presumably before the focus locally changed to cotton. My grea...

Re: Hemp Butts Cottages

Thanks to you both. I haven't posted this request previously. I'm a new member. I would like to know if the cottages still exist or, if not, where they were located. My line of the Brown family is descended from a son of the William Brown born in 1813. However, although this son migrated to Manchest...

Hemp Butts Cottages

My Great, Great Grandfather, William Brown was born in Barnoldswick in 1813. He's recorded in the censuses up to 1891 and lived, at least for part of the time, in Hemp Butts Cottages. I assume these were located near Butts Mill. He was an "Engine Driver" at a (un-named) cotton mill. His wi...
