Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Nice to know that you're all still active! I'm well thanks and I've nearly finished my book about the Pickles boys. It's only taken me 20 years and a hundred revisions to write it!

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
RE SPRINGS Records from Bridge Chapel show that my 3x grandfather, James Pickles, was born at Springs in February 1806, the son of Richard Pickles, cotton weaver, and his wife Betty (nee Aitken). Was Butts Mil a spinning or weaving mil? Later records show that he was a handloom weaver of delaine amo...

Re: Caught by Craven Bank Notes
Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs! I didn't expect that! I've just Googled the Craven Bank... they had their heads screwed on those canny Yorkshiremen. I wonder if that's why there are so many pubs names "The Craven Heifer", because so many of those banknotes were passed over the coun...

Caught by Craven Bank Notes
I came across this item when I was doing some research. It is part of an article about Blackburn Fair:- The Blackburn Standard of 10th April 1861 reported that the Courts had dealt with a number of cases of drunken behaviour by both men and women, due to the large influx of fairgoers from surroundin...

Re: 1841 Census in Roughlee
I don’t know where they originated. Their banns were read in Colne which was my ggg grandmother’s parish and in Barlick. They certainly moved around a bit. They lived at Heightside, Springs, Closes and moved to Roughlee in 1826.

What tosh this government comes out with.
I listen to “More or Less “ on Radio 4.. If you haven’t heard it, it’s a brilliant programme about statistics. Today they discussed our fishing rights. Our stake has improved by just under4 %. We must defend our waters with gunboats!!!

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Currently reading “The Lies of Adults” by Elena Ferrante. A real page turner but probably of more interest to women. It’s about adolescence. I recently read “The Nickel Boys” and if anyone wonders about “Black Lives Matter “ they would understand if they read it.... maybe. It’s heart rending and had...

Why didn’t I think of that! Just goes to show that two heads are better than one! Thanks.

1841 Census in Roughlee
After nine years I am still editing my book about the three Pickles brothers from Barnoldswick, who left Roughlee in the mid 19th century to travel with portable theatres. Will I ever get it finished? I have struggled to decipher the occupation of my ggg grandfather, Richard Pickles, who lived in Ro...

Wow, Thanks for all that! I'm going to look the theatre up. It may have been Leybourne's theatre. Oooh! Very exciting!

Plaques in Barlick
There is a plaque on ? the old Post Office which mentions that it was the site of a theatre which used to visit Barlick, but doesn't say when. Can anyone shed any light upon this please?

Trump is even putting a positive spin on the fact that the USA are now at the top of the Coronavirus league table, surpassing China, claiming that it's the scale of the testing which has revealed the numbers rather than his denial and stupidity which have allowed the spread!

Re: HOUSEHOLD TIPS NOT FOUND IN WOMAN'S WEEKLY
I am in the process of chucking out flour which is at least four years past its sell by date. Don't usually take much notice of sell by dates but need a bit of room. I once had a cleaner who threw out some cans past their sell by date. I nearly fell in the dustbin getting them out! Load of old cobbl...

Re: LOSING WEIGHT
Just been smiling at some of these posts. A few years ago I went to my GP because I had a numb thigh and tingling in my fingers. I thought I'd had a mini stroke! After I'd "hopped on the scale" the sarcastic devil told me that my weight was just about right...if I had been a 6'2" male...

Went to Manchester to see the biopic of Ken Loach. Afterwards the man himself did a Q and A session. A great film director who tackled subjects others wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

Re: GRIMSHAW/CROWTREES INFORMATION
This is so fascinating! The one thing I have learned about family and local history is that one needs to check and recheck any information before you are sure and even then you can't be sure! I think Wendy and Jean Ingham are probably right about the location of Judson's Farm though. It must have be...
