Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Small fire last night, I refuse to have anything less than a comfortable temperature when I'm relaxing watching me telly! 6 bags of smokeless delivered by B&D yesterday. We are ready for winter! Don't laugh, in case you haven't noticed we are into September. The lump of workbench I had to cut ou...

The new man at Barclays will be earning his money. See this LINK for the news that they were making money on food futures, ie. raising the price of food to some of the poorest people on the planet. Dirty money!

Deep into Stalingrad. Today I go in with Zhukov in the great pincer movement that cut the Germans off and was a smashing blow to operation Barbarossa. I shall read Berlin next!

Re: GOOD TV

I'm enjoying 'Parade's End' on BBC 2. Based on Ford Madox Ford's books it's a bit deep but a wonderful exposition of the higher levels of society around the beginning of the century. Very lavis production in association with HBO. Well worth watching I reckon if you don't mind having to concentrate.

Reading Beevor's book on D Day I was reminded of the reason why many aircraft had broad white stripes painted on the wings. It was supposed to protect them from 'friendly fire' by identifying them as Allied aircraft but unfortunately in the heat of battle it didn't always work!

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Richard, isn't it a shock when there is a clash of language like that. My worst moment was when I commented that I thought I'd been 'jewed' to my companion in NY. It never struck me that she might find it offensive because she was Jewish! I know, it sounds crass but I didn't even associate the word ...

I doubt if anyone is going to have a stab at this and Ian is so close. It's the ash pit or midden for 12 King Street. I know this for a fact because it was noted on the deeds as it was detached. Instead of being next to the house it was in Philip Street, I have no idea why there was this peculiar ar...

I've never had a cold call from an insurance company. Probably because I have never dealt with a company direct, I do it all through Swinton at Burnley and have never had cause for complaint.

Plugs, don't dismiss the Imperial System too quickly. There were some very useful relationships inside the system, one example is the fact that the price of a hundredweight in shillings equalled the price of a ton in pounds. If you were reared with it you soon found there were many short cuts like t...

A big headline in the BET announcing a 'vibrant plan for regenerating Nelson Town Centre'. Now where have I heard that one before? One thing that strikes me is that Nelson is a new town formed by the amalgamation of a few villages when the steam textile industry hit the area. Since the death of the ...

Cloggy, the mindset of bureaucracy thew world over can't be fathomed. Funniest cash story I have is being asked for identification when attempting to pay cash in Penney's in NY in about 1980. I told them to cancel the sale!
