Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

I got another book down off the shelf containing books I bought to read when I retire. 'The Lives of Enoch Powell' by Patrick Cosgrave. Heavy going because Cosgrave has a very self-consciously 'academic' style. Many of his sentences are so full of sub-clauses and commas that you get lost and have to...

Re: Barlick police

Steve, yes they had cars but not to the same extent as today. Popular models were Ford Anglias and Morris Minors. Traffic police had graduated from the old Wolsleys to Ford Zephyrs and the old chrome plated bell on the front had given way to the first sirens. The police were also very quick to adopt...

I think you are right Moh. I always said that the world of work was the best club I ever joined and almost all my old mates date back to work and related activities. Thinking about the cold spell. I have the freedom to concentrate on comfort and warmth. I well remember picking milk up from the farms...

I must have missed that one Moh. Sounds like a goodie but somehow keeping the cling film in the fridge doesn't sit easily with me. Freezers can be useful tools, remember our discussion about removing chewing gum from fabric? I also use to ploy of putting dry mint stalks in the freezer in a plastic b...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Had a look at Webster... They say that it comes from Medieval French for 'bent, crooked' and the ultimate root could be Latin 'gamba'. They also mention that in old Norman dialect 'gambier' was bad legs and 'gambie' meant lame.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

I agree Tiz. Quite amazing to me how so many people lack the ability to take a detached view based on evidence. This isn't confined to climate change and global warming, we see it in all fields of debate about policy making. It's always refreshing to hear someone focussing on logical assessment and ...

I'd be a lot more impressed with the town CCTV if I thought it was getting better than the national average of 15% of footage actually monitored. Me also Sue. You are doing your best.... Isn't this turning out to be a great topic! Jules. I remember where I got my information about the good and bad fairies. It's in 'Religion and the Decline of Magic' by Keith Thomas. One of my favourite books. Go and look in there to see how you can attract the house-fairies! It must be deep in the folk memory. When I was staying with Martha i...

Moh, I hope I'm wrong also but the conditions are just right. Only thing that's in our favour at the moment is that the weather is easterly moving and that is a dry quarter for us. Watch for the wind swinging to the South, that could be the trigger. Jules is right, colder again this morning, Glass i...

Each to his own. Have you ever looked at the price differential between ready made and home-cooked? Are you content to let the manufacturer source the ingredients? Local shops and natural ingredients are my route and just buy the prepared pasta. (I can't make spaghetti!

Just back in the warm after our walk round Barlick. It's bitterly cold and a good job we only have a light breeze. Broken cloud and seagulls about in the Village Green, not a good sign. If my bones are right there's some snow on the way.

Re: Joseph Bracewell/Susy Hartley/John Higgin

Higgin or Higgins isn't a common name in the district. In his History of the Baptist Church, the Rev. Winnard says that in 1500 the Higgins family were one of the six dissenting families in Barlick, remember that this was high risk then. He names the others as Mitchell, Edmondson, Hargreaves, Barret...
