Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

The fact that whilst most paths were clear and dry, the well-used path through Valley Gardens was still deadly. Someone should take note, very heavy foot traffic as it is such a useful short cut. Same applies to Butts. What a difference a couple of degrees rise in temperature makes. CH hasn't fired ...

Re: SPRING 2012

Belle, good thinking. Unfortunately in my job I had to be out at those times and the worst conditions I ever encountered were then. Great experience but best avoided! We can say the snow is gone in Barlick. Glass on 30.2" and trying to rise. No frost, dry underfoot, slight NW breeze bit it's no...

The roast stew was ready for teatime and enough left to last a couple of days so that's OK.

Re: SPRING 2012

No thanks Maz, in return I promise not to do the rain dance until requested. Much better underfoot where packed snow has gone but where it persists, like on the paths in Valley Gardens, it's deadly!

Nolic is dead right, a lovely little example of the tinsmith's art. There were hundreds and thousands of them but I wonder how many survived.
Bugger! I shall have to think of another one now!

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?

Health and weather permitting, even though knackered, I can still do a spell of light hoeing (Dutch Hoe, I can manage pushing!) Trip to Co-op, Oxtail in small oven with Parsnip, Carrot, Onion and rough cut spuds. Lovely way of cooking, keeps all the flavour in and can be left alone for 4 hours. Warm...

Richard, many years since I heard 'Corporation Pop'. Ever come across 'Flag Hash', used when someone had no food and was trailing round looking for what they could pick up cheap or free.

Michel Fallon (deputy chairman Tory Party) yesterday: "Nobody knows more about the NHS that Andrew Lansley and David Cameron". Apart from the breath-taking arrogance of this statement, does he really believe this?

Too much commercialism Eileen and I can never understand why posting the Census online shouldn't be a function of government and free to the user.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

I can't remember where it was but I can remember a stretch of motorway being closed because of big icicles hanging form lamps and bridges. A young friend delivered three bags of kindling for the stove, free. I've known him since he was born and isn't it nice when the young uns look after the old and...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

You were up an hour before me Jules... I used a term yesterday and wondered whether it was local or more widespread. If we had a beast that was off colour indoors at the end of the winter we often said that "Doctor Green would cure her". Meaning of course that getting outside to grass afte...

That's right Moh, I remember his wife well, she was a regular customer and a very nice lady. My brain kicked into gear last night and I'm pretty sure that the man my dad bought the shop off was called Foster. Isn't it strange how our personal search facility works!

Early stone houses were always built of the stone on the site because of transport costs. Someone has no historical knowledge wh...
