Re: RIGHT, A New Book For Barlick

Thank you Gentlemen. In the new database there is a folder simply labelled "Advice" that is where all this stuff is going. Its quite amazing just how much can be gleaned from the net by accident, the latest is the name of the CO of Barlick Home Guard in WW2, and where he worked. Back to it...

Re: RIGHT, A New Book For Barlick

All of this will definitely get you a mention in the book Tizer. I have spent most of the day building a new database on the second drive for this task. Most of what is above I also copied to our local reporter, she is very enthusiastic and has mailed me and wants to do a story ASAP. Its amazing wha...

Re: RIGHT, A New Book For Barlick

That Tizer is very valuable information indeed for which you have my sincere gratitude. I was going to ask if a publisher could do this from a dvd as opposed to printed sheets. As to the digital versus book question there will be many older people in this area who do not have computers but probably ...

Re: RIGHT, A New Book For Barlick

Sitting thinking about this last night I realised that something was missing. First of all the local Cadet Force, this was in place in Barlick before WW1, my Father was a member. I have just had a look at a picture of him taken in about 1913 in his Cadet Uniform, the cap badge appears to be Duke of ...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

I believe that we can forget that little worry. I have just picked six names at random from those on the memorial, out of the six. five were born elsewhere. This suggests that a large part of the men were born out of town, and I do not intend to pursue this further. The list stands unchanged, but I ...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

Thanks for that Ian. What I am going to do next is have a look at the memorials existing names to see if there is any parallel. One thing that is noticeable is that nearly all of the names on the memorial are in the book CPGW, maybe that is where they came from!

Re: RIGHT, A New Book For Barlick

The original book "Cravens Part in the Great War" was about A4 size but landscape in form, being wider than it is high. This does not fit well on the average bookshelf, but if it were "portrait" it would, I have many books of this shape and size. Next, this book will require a ti...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

The horns of a dilemma!! Of the first group above, two were Barlickers in the sense that they were born were resident here at their time of death, the remainder were born elsewhere, in Salterforth, Bracewell, Bacup, Padiham, Great Harwood, Skipton and further away in Lancaster. As such they may well...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

There is no need to look far from home to see things that grab attention. I can sit in the lounge and watch all manner of things that get up my nose. Vehicles that are huge right down to cars that are not, but all going at speeds that are well above the legal limit, and frequently with smart phone t...

RIGHT, A New Book For Barlick

Or, if you like,"Write a New Book for Barlick. Last year some of you may recall a topic about Barlick and Cravens Part in the Great War. It started off "Khaki in colour, sombre in content". How it came about is now history, but much has happened since then, the addition of names to th...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

It is done at last with a time span of 5 months. I now have a list of 19 names for addition to our War Memorial from WW1 and so here they are:- Private George Alfred Bailey No 5362 Duke of Wellingtons WR Regiment. Gunner Peter Barrett No 88959 Royal Garrison Artillery. Private Joseph Clayton No 2411...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

The end is in sight at last. I am doing the final check on the 22 names that I have, thats 18 done and 4 to go, just 2 cannot be confirmed as resident here up to now. Earlier I mentioned correspondence with a Marion Dunn of Liverpool, she sent me a copy of a postcard from her Grandfathers effects, a...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

The appeal put out in the BET and Craven Herald at the begining of the year is stiil bringing in the occasional responses, although most end up with a deal of becoming "side tracked" it can be interesting. At the weekend a mail was passed to me by Hannah Upton of the BET, from a lady in Li...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

Thank you Stanley, with a bit of mathematics it would appear that I was right about the high impact. The nearest estimate of men who served from Barlick is around 850 so it was indeed a very high proportion of casualties. Thanks to the very kind offer of a 32 bit PC stack from Whyperion, I now have ...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

At last the long search for the WW1 missing names from the towns memorial is almost at an end. This week I turned my attention to a list of 19 names linked to Barlick, most were born here but were permanently resident elsewhere at the time of death, There are still several names from Scotts list to ...

Roger that Tizer. My main PC is set up not to accept any incoming without my permission so I do not have any large antivirus stuff loaded. The wife is now back at work on light duties and I am up to my ears in the research again. New avenues for this keep opening up, with each a virtual "Pandor...

Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

At last I believe we have settled the matter of Pte William (Willie) Dowd, the William we had been looking at was the Son of William Dowd senior, both were resident on Essex St. We now have conclusive proof that William junior survived the war in the form of a copy of his discharge papers, it was Wi...

Thank you, what I have is CPGW, CWGC, Ancestry with military records and LBMD, all else is down to a fair degree of patience and determination. Re: The Barlick War Memorial Group

I have just spent the morning streamlining my database for this project, and as the final act I have brought in my old Packard Bell I-Extreme PC and re-installed it, my latest rig would not open the Soldies died disc as my system is 64 bit, the disc is 32. So now I have two PCs in the lounge, two mo...
