A long time ago I posted a picture of the Old Drill Hall on here, and cannot find it. Can anyone help please. Happy New Year to you all. Thomo.

Re: OBITUARIES

Mr. Vernon Wood of Barnoldswick, b 1924 (my Brother in Law). Vernon passed away peacefully in his sleep in Cravenside Care Home yesterday, almost 11 months after the death of his wife Lilian (my Sister). Vernon has been a part of my life since 1943 and married my Sister in 1949. He served his time a...

Re: GROWING OLD!

My neighbour, James, suggested fitting an SSD drive instead of replacing the original type, and after much consideration, that is what I have done. The new drive is a Klingston 240 GB unit, it also required a conversion mounting plate. Fitting the new drive was the easy part, getting it up and runni...

Re: WELCOME TO CAT WORLD, 2nd Edition

Yesterday the pain and sorrow of losing our little Evie was beginning to ease a little, and had been replaced by a degree of resignation. We had done the right thing by her there being no alternative, and her passing was swift and painless. What followed later yesterday when it was time to pay the b...

Re: WELCOME TO CAT WORLD, 2nd Edition

Pet ownership whilst not essential, can be most beneficial, and in particular to they who are in old age. If a pet is a rescued animal, it comes with the knowledge that you are trying to help a less fortunate creature and the love and appreciation that may be received usually outweighs anything else...

Re: GROWING OLD!

There are many interesting comments there, thank you all. In regard to my computer problems I am extremely grateful to my neighbour for getting me up and running again. This PC was my 70th birthday present in 2010, I understand that at that time it was one of the most powerful and efficient general ...

Re: GROWING OLD!

No Wendy it was not Colin, for who's help I was very grateful, and still am. This spans the past 12 months and 3 "expert" attempts. In regard to my other issue, the very pleasant young woman who "was" at the centre of this is from East Lancashire and of a different cultural backg...

Re: GROWING OLD!

One of the things that may sound familiar due to the passing of time and which certainly applies to me, is that tolerance levels are somewhat diminished. Disciplines gained over the years, such as punctuality, forthrightness and a fair degree of honesty are more readily viewed as a problem if blatan...

Re: GROWING OLD!

Sometimes things happen, completely out of the blue, that make you realise that despite the onset of "Old Age", experience and knowledge gained can still play a very useful part in the world of today. On the 11th of February 1917, a young married man from this town, Private David Walling, ...

Re: THE VALUE of HOBBIES

Two very interesting replies there. First, Chinatyke, if you are using a laptop, your ability to use a comprehensive Flight Simulator is just a tad restricted. With FS9 you are required to insert disc 4 to use the system, there is a way around this, but it needs an add-on. With the basic FSX, once i...

Re: THE VALUE of HOBBIES

Chinatyke, which FS system do have? For many years now and since the arrival of FSX, it appears that FS9 is still by far the most popular version. The basic graphics in FSX are better than FS9, but there are more good quality add-ons for the latter.

There is little doubt that most things are better now, its how people apply the advantages that makes the difference.

Re: THE VALUE of HOBBIES

Hi, and thanks for your response. What I have is a compound setup coupled to a very fast PC, this enables graphics to work to the max. The basics are FSX Gold edition plus acceleration pack, FS9 and Combat FS3. The controls are Saitek pro, yoke and quadrants, Saitek stick, this can be used on its ow...

THE VALUE of HOBBIES

When in 1947 and in June the summer finally arrived, I was out walking with my Father. Heading West down Greenberfield Lane where the bridge crosses the Stock Beck, We heard a strange noise coming from our right, and went see what the cause was, In the area then known as the “Old Mother Dam” and the...

At this point, I would wish to apologise to any of you who may think that I may be "Blowing my own trumpet", when it comes down to how my life has been, and what I have experienced, be assured of this, it is all fact, and not the fictional ramblings of someone with a wishful mind. Each day...

Re: GROWING OLD!

When we “Oldies” embarked on life’s journey, we did not have access to what is available today. When you take a good look at this scenario, it becomes quite clear that we probably would have made much better use of what is now on offer, few of us were handed our futures on a plate. Despite this diff...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Purity would be very hard to define if applied to all living things. In this context I believe that it belongs to my other topic, Growing Older. Many things have taken on new meanings, Ian's "Gay" being a prime example. It used to be used as an expression of happiness, contentment, and a c...

Re: GROWING OLD!

For many of us when we were young, tragedy was a common occurrence, both personally, locally and nationally. At the time this was usually dealt with in the stoical manner of the age, and regardless of personal feelings and grief, life had to continue. More recent events have brought about a change i...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Re: GROWING OLD!

Over many years the two of us have built up a moderate collection of music and video items. The musical ones are in the form of records (vinyl), cassettes and discs, video being on cassettes and DVD’s. Many of these items are now quite old, and the devices required to play them began to fail. This s...

Re: GROWING OLD!

When we take a look around us in respect of the changes that have, and are still taking place in our lifetimes, it may be difficult to understand where we and this World are going. Downhill, and quickly could be the assumption. It is hard to imagine a future that could be better than what we have kn...

We "Oldies"" whoever we are, and whatever we have achieved, seen, done. or experienced, is all down to our past, our origins. Before going any further, I will briefly outline my origins. On my Maternal side, nearly all were immigrants from Ireland, who settled in Lancashire. The Walsh...

Re: GROWING OLD!

Kev, at 56 you aren't old, becoming hardened in relation to death, does not mean that you lack compassion. In 1973 I was at sea in the gulf of Mexico when I was informed that my Mother had died. All efforts to get me home were made, but sadly I missed her funeral by 24 hours. Not knowing where my Wi...
