Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Pluggy , looks like you need solar heating and a wood burner , that gas works out at what , £240 a quarter , funny how mine for mid terrace is coming up at about £300 but I cannot do the changes as its not my property and owner wont make the adjustments. No room on the roof (full of PV panels) for ...

Congratulations and best wishes to you all. Charlotte's ain't all sugar and spice.... at least mine isn't. Nolic :welcome: Her mother wasn't, can't really expect much more from the 3rd generation. Yes panny, she's my first grandchild. She'll be home today if the hospital doesn't drag their feet dis...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Read the posts, Stephen, I took it as saying you used bottled gas for heating as well as cooking. Come to think of it bottled gas won't be metered anyway, its already paid for and you just change the bottle when it runs out. Dohhhhh........... I'm not disciplined enough for pencil and notebook. ;) I...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

I'm a grandfather, my daughter gave birth to a baby girl just before 8 PM last night. She weighed 3.16 kg or just shy of 7lb in old units. Mother and baby (Charlotte Grace) 'doing well'. Not bad going seeing as she only left Barlick for Burnley general at about 6:30pm. They said she'd done most of t...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Maybe I should do energy monitoring as a sideline to repairing computers. The photographs are fully automated, a couple of cheap webcams attached to my little 'server' - the hacked NAS box that has been referred to in another thread. Theres also a couple of white LEDS so the cameras can see in the o...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Not a direct comparison I'm afraid Stanley, mine is an end terrace, so I've 3 external walls losing heat. The Gable end is bigger than the other 2 combined , these are narrow houses. For what its worth, these are my gas meter readings from 16:00 on the 11th January and this morning at 08:00 : http:/...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Pluggy , have you found that RAID systems are more problematic in when they do fail they go bigtime? ( Had one failure in the days when RAID 3 on 5 1GB disks was thought to be state of the art for our small business. ) Also had one early computer failure when the expensive computer system housed in...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Sounds a lot like the system that was put in place at the school I once worked at and the system I said was unnecessarily complex for a school. One huge SAN system which formed the storage for 4 physical servers hosting around a dozen virtual servers which was a single point of failure. Part of the ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

10k per year over 330 users is £30 a year or about £3 a month per user  Thats for a 2Mb/s link, most people will already have a connection faster than that, sharing it 330 ways will reduce it to a crawl. Unlike ADSL, its the same speed both ways. Further question: Would the file system my mac...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

What about yousendit.com , or stuffit to pack the data up. If Stanley's upload speed is anything like mine, 200Gb will take until the middle of summer to upload over Orange's ADSL. A T1 will take somewhere between 3minutes and a week, depending on how much money you can throw at it. The last I had ...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

The FIT is having its desired effect, that is to reduce the cost of installationss. They've about halved in price since it was introduced in April 2010. It that continues and power continues to rise in price, I don't think it will be too long before they become viable in their own right. They probab...

They would still be able to sell my electricity, that won't change whatever the meter, they are worse off because I won't be paying them for the 6 units I took from the grid today and I won't be paying for the 3 units wound back from my meter. I will be paid for the units I've generated at the FIT r...

The update to the 'old fashioned equipment' has been put back (again) its now standing at the end of May. For much of last year it was October 2011, then moved back to end of March 2012 and recently moved back again.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

The audio on some modern laptops (they usually make a lot of noise about it via stickers on the wrist pad) is surprisingly good. They aren't cheap either. Having said that the audio on most laptops is utter cr*p as you say panny. Heres something I bought a while back and paid a bit more than a cheap...
