Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Thanks Stephen, I take it for Baked read backed. One question, do you mean everything or just data. If I have to back up everything include a section on how to do that because I have no idea.... :biggrin2: Just your data will do, Full backups on Linux (or indeed any operating system) are more pain ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

I've perused Tizers notes and it looks OK. If you make sure all your stuff is baked up before you start, if something does go badly wrong we should be able to sort something out between Us. I'd say go for it,if it all goes pear shaped we'll sort something out.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

My laptop has been on 20.04 for a good while now, although it was a clean install from scratch. If its any consolation Windows10,vs Windows 11 is very controversial.

The HP 250 G9 starts at sub £400 https://www.ebuyer.com/1542380-hp-250-g ... q8b9es-abu which is the level I'm looking at. They do go up to about double that. I couldn't build a half decent desktop for that today

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Just to show computer troubles afflict those who used to earn a living by them, about a month ago my wifes laptop bought in May 2018 succumbed to the dreaded broken screen hinge. Its been botched for the time being with sticky tape I decided it wasn't worth trying to repair having done many when I w...

And the incessant rambling about infra red heating like it was something new. Many, many moons ago before gas central heating became ubiquitous, the standard way of heating a bathroom was with a bright chromium grill thingy with a pull switch with a low wattage red hot electric element inside it. Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

I got the ticket in the late eightiies or early nineties I forget. Once the internet became a thing in the mid nineties I lost interest, it got harder and harder to justify it as the internet gained capability. Now with high quality real time worldwide video being so trivially available on something...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Basically the only one who stands a real chance of changing your mind is yourself. There are many who believe the Earth is flat, but changing their mind is an immense challenge. If they ever find their way out it will likely be of their own making. The ugly truths of the rather pathetic way the huma...

What I didn't mention is why I favour proportional representation. I;m well aware of all the pros and cons and no I wouldn't really like p*ll*cks like Farage having a voice. But by its very nature it forces people to have to work together to make decisions. We have sides to our house of parliament a...

I am no expert but like a lot of contributors to this thread I reckon we could make a pretty good coalition come the revolution. Over time, I've moved away from thinking that private companies selling us energy is a good idea. Back in the day Maggie sold us something that already belonged to us and we swallowed it, fast forward 35+ years and the stability, predictability and control of public ownership is something we need ba...

I take it a stage further, if I'm not expecting an email or text message, I'll either completely ignore it or verify its source by another means. A phone call from an unknown number I might answer it and then say "If you are whom you claim to be there will be no problem contacting me in writing...
