Re: ENERGY MATTERS
Regarding stuff made in China, expect less stuff to be made there in future. China is starting to fall out of favour, there are numerous reasons for this. The big one is that wages in China have increased sixfold in real terms in the last 3 decades. Its no longer such a cheap place to manufacture. A...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS
Am I right in thinking that's £55 for a full charge? Not a lot of incentive there to spend a fortune going electric..... Like the banks, some energy companies are laughing at us while they drag in obscene profits. I can understand why some deniers reckoned that this is what climate change theory is...

My neighbour has just bought himself an EV, a Hyundai Kona, similar size to my ix35 oil burner. Chatting today about public charging points and how expensive they are. It's 85p a kw at an Electravolt charger and it's a 64kw full charge, he'll get around 250 miles out of that. By comparison, the Oct...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS
I very much doubt the government would want an anti-capitalist who thinks the time for chasing net zero was 4 or 5 decades ago. Sooner of later some spark will catch on that a system that depends on continuous growth is folly on a planet with limited resources. History teaches us that the worlds emp...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS
Inaccuracy in the BBC article, The graphic "How a heat pump works" says they act like an air conditioner in summer. The usual type (an air to water) which is the one you can get a £5000 grant for cannot really act as an air conditioner in summer. They use larger than normal radiators or un...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Its way more complex than the gulf stream turning off. The gulf stream is driven by the rotation of the earth and won't stop unless the earth stops rotating. What the melting of the arctic will do is slow down or stop whats called the AMOC (Atlantic Meridianal Overturning Circulation ). Newspapers r...

If we get 'netzero'd' back to the middle ages - and that surely would happen - and the 'climate' doesn't change - can I have a refund? If its your call you can't lose and you probably wouldn't accept anybody elses call Net Zero is a delusional pipe dream. it could never happen for a whole v...

suicidal quest for Net Zero Way too little, way too late by the consensus of climate scientists by my reading. If we took serious steps 30 years ago we might have stood some chance. Instead we used as many fossil fuels in the past 30 years as we did in the 3000 years preceding that. The human race ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
You can use voip phones for voip but the cheaper option is using old school analogue phones with a voip adaptor. I had a voip system for my business back in 2010, but then it went over the standard ADSL broadband which wasn't even FTTC. It was so I had a separate landline number to my home landline ...

So is his, he has some old modem cables that fit, but they don't work, presumably because they are wired back to front. The point being he wasn't provided with a suitable cable to make the VOIP work with his phone.

Another couple of years and we'll all be going through the full fibre landline hoop. I think I'll be in two minds whether I'l bother keeping the landline when I make the switch (probably when they kill off the old copper network in 2025) My friend has just done it and he elected to keep his landline...

I can confirm its a CR2032 cell. I have a few in my computer bag I have from my self employed days. But I would think they are available in Barlick easily and cheaply enough. The biggest job is taking the side panel off the computer. You can usually get the battery out and replace it with your finge...

For the luddites, there is a big difference in efficiency between an air-air system like mine and the standard air-water system that the majority of people fit. The big downside of air-air systems is that they don't do hot water which is why most people fit an air to water system. An air to water is...

EDF just put my monthly direct debit up from £113 to £145 in anticipation of my old cheap tariff expiring next month. With all this talk about BIOS (UEFI on modern machines) unless you know exactly what you're doing and are feeling very lucky don't be tempted to upgrade it........ here be dragons. Unlike the operating system which is dead easy in comparison. I probably won't upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 on this computer...
