Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY. TRIPPS ORIGINAL
so naturally it's on its way. I wondered yesterday why it had not arrived - so looked on Abebooks and found that I had added it to my basket but it was still there, and I had not actually paid for it. That was soon remedied - and imagine my surprise when it arrived today! Rossendale to Cambridgeshi...

Re: POLITICS CORNER
I'll leave you to the delights of Mayor Making... The meeting is worthy of comment I'd say, though the average audience online was about six. with a peak of ten! The low turnout at the May 2nd 2024 election is also noteworthy.and the fact that there is now not a single Labour Party Councillor on Pe...

Re: BOB'S BITS
I understand almost nothing of today's Bob's Bits.
Should I accept my intellectual limitations, and respect it as being beyond my understanding - or dismiss it as a lot of nonsense?

Nadhim Zahawi has crawled from under his stone, to declare that his mistakes "were his own" and he wishes he had been "more transparent" about his tax affairs. Translates as "please buy my forthcoming autiobigraphy, and "please Miss can I have a peerage"? P...

I don't think it's amything to do wth Aurora Borealis - someone left the front door open at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo. There is so much frenzied energy in there, that what escapes will easily be visible from Northern England.

Re: BARLICK LIFE 1900 ONWARDS. (1)
That's one of the best posts I've seen on here for a long time. It typifies the site, and makes up for the many daily routine posts which have become so predictable. and frankly a bit boring. It doesn't fully correspond to my childhood recollections. Fire lighting always involved 'firewood' - never ...

Well - the Doctor from Manchester knew without hesitation that you bashed a 'pifiata' with a stick, but knew nowt about Bengal cats. Takes all sorts. I've googled it, and I'm still not sure.

Bernard Hill has died today. We went to the same school, though he was a couple of years after me and I was unaware of him. From Yosser Hughes to the Duke of Norfolk in Wolf Hall. . .
Bernard Hill
RIP.

I'm watching (accidentally) an appearance before a ParliamentarySelect Committe of this lady - Sabrina Cohen- Hatton / She speaks fluently and well - as you might expect with that CV. I've heard a lot about mysogyny, and protected characteristics, institutional racism, etc etc, but nothing at all ab...

I just found this in Angus Bethune Reach's (great name !) book. The Middleton chapter was transcribed by Stanley a while ago, and featured on the site. Then I found the full book can be bought on Abebooks for the usual price of a cup of coffee - so naturally it's on its way. " Teetotall...

Re: GOOD TV
Just watched The Great British Sex Scandal on Channel 5. Lived through it of course - but had forgotten most of it. The behaviour of the main characters, Cecil Parkinson and Margaret Thatcher was deeply shocking. If any futher reasons never to vote Tory ever again are needed, (unlikely) I suggest yo...

Never heard of the Duke of Argyle thing. Insult to flea ridden Scots? I came across the word eschatology yesterday and of course had to Google it. The result took me to deep places indeed . "Christian eschatology looks to study and discuss matters such as death and the afterlife, Heaven...

Altruistic..... I think so David. Yes - you are quite right. "Showing a disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others; unselfish. "it was an entirely altruistic act" I thought it had to show a 'loss' to you as well as a 'gain' to someone else. I was wrong and stand ...

The programme which followed Redeye is a travel thing thing with Martin Clunes. It's been on for two consecutive nights, and I like it. I Iike most things he is in except Doc Martin, who I feel should have been sectioned a long time ago. Last night he was in Micronesia. No me neither - but I should ...

Is anyone as concerned as I am at the visit to Kyev Ukraine yesterday by 'Sophie Wessex' ? I think this is prima facie involvement of the Royal Family in external politics. It's impossible to imagine the King himself going there at this time - leaving aside his current health problems -but she is ob...

I think I will discontinue this thread for now. The repetitive nature and the daily discipline of posting doesn't suit my character, and many of the 'clipps' are too long, and I doubt that many are reading them. At least The Kazi of Bukkur, Jam Nando (Nindo) and Makli Hill have had their moment in t...

The Scottish First Minister and leader of the SNP Humza Yusaf has resigned. Now might be a good time to anticipate the future and do your "due diligence" on the man who will probably take on the role after the General Elelection, when Labour almost inevitably become the largest party. What...

Problem when this sort of issue is raised is that it is assumed that there are just two arguments -for and against. In fact there is a very wide range of possible scenarios. It is unarguable that there are some who game the system, and do not deserve the benefit, however many do, and should get it. ...
