Lies, damned lies and statistics

The original topic `Lies, damned lies and statistics' is now in the OGFB archive and when I can get a web link for it I will add it to this post. I thought it was worth starting the topic again on the new OGFB forum because it covers so many of the day to day problems of numbers and statistics being...

Re: CUNNING WHEEZES

Pharmacists were stopped from selling large packs of aspirin many years ago because of frequent cases of people overdosing or using for an extended time and dying from the consequences. Aspirin irritates the gut and can lead to internal bleeding and ultimately death if the dose is very high or if yo...

When the BBC first reported the Costa Allegra trouble they said it was owned by the same company as the Costa Concordia which ran aground recently off Italy. During the same news broadcast they reported on two cruise ships being refused entry to Argentina because they had just been to the Falklands....

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

It will be interesting to see how the Raspberry Pi progresses, especially because it uses Linux software instead of Windows. And if it gets people more interested in how computers work and how to write simple programs all the better. If it gets them to use free Linux software instead of shoving mone...

A visit at lunchtime from a friend who lives in the Scilly Isles, formerly a nutrition scientist, then retired and now an expert on bats, registered to handle them. Set up a project with the University of Exeter and re-discovered the Brown-Eared Bat which was thought to be extinct in the Scillies. N...

Haha, lovely one Pluggy. It's typical of the planners to not know the legislation properly for their own profession. I read the self-build magazines and it's quite common for the builders to have to correct the planners!

Re: CUNNING WHEEZES

Whippy, Stanley's right, there's a big scam with inflated prices. It took only a few seconds to find an example with one of Stanley's books. A seller is asking £31.06 plus £2.80 postage for a secondhand copy of the book which is available new , direct from Amazon, for £12.75, postage free. See this ...

Whippy, perhaps I've used the wrong name for the Amazon programme that I described above. The programme exists and is very prominent on the Amazon.co.uk, and it's responsible for a lot of the problems that Stanley and I have described. I thought it was called Amazon Associates but I've looked it up ...

Re: Minor glitches

Doc, I looked back at the old archived General Chat and Fun Area to find some old threads. At the bottom of the page I clicked on Page 2 and got it OK but when I clicked any beyond 2 I got a strange page in totally different style listing lots of general `categories' (but not OG ones). Is this OK or...

Very common on Amazon, Stanley. When you are buying on the Amazon site you may be buying from Amazon or it might be from Amazon Associates which is anybody who signs up to Amazon's scheme allowing you to sell your goods on their web site. When I buy from Amazon I always try to do it direct from Amaz...

Judging from position on the sloping road it looks more like Middle Trossell to me! Bradders, if you get time to pop into Launceston make a visit to The Bookshop, on Church Street (opposite the church, surprisingly!) and say hello to the owner, Richard Graham. Great for books about Cornwall a...

I listened to the recording of Paul Lewis and, yes, it was more specifically about taking pensions early. But it gave me a chance to vent my feelings about the annuity scams! One of the biggest Cunning Wheezes now is what I call the `black is white' trick. It's very simple - the company makes up its...

I'd be a member of Craven & Pendle Geological Society if I lived in Barlick - but I'm a couple of hundred miles away! Geology is great fun as well as being intellectually satisfying and is a good way to improve powers of observation. Mrs Tiz has long been an amateur geologist and I got interested in...

"Unless you have evidence Stanley, all the people with Phd's I've ever met in the city don't work for the banks the Treasury bailed out. To continue to trail the line is a bizarre untruth." RBS and Lloyds recruit quantitative analysts and quantitative programmers with PhDs in maths and statistics fo...
