Re: Superstore developments

They are currently fighting to hold onto 2nd place, but it might take 2-3 years to turn around the business because of the costs Tesco are still the biggest by a healthy margin, but their lead has diminished. Sainsbury's and Iceland have increased their share. (Sainsbury's since they dumped a certa...

Re: BEWARE! THE BANKS ARE OUT TO GET YOU!

Kev, you mentioned somewhere that the date was 6th not 12th of July. You're right, I checked and I had misread it. Not Kev, me ;) The obvious building society is the Skipton, nice shiny branch on Church St, its practically worthless away from a passbook, I opened an on-line account with them, despi...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

On another of my haunts, there's a long thread about someone installing a heat pump using a stream as a source, built a nice weir so there was plenty of depth. It got silted up in heavy rainfall and wound up re-doing the source under his garden. http://www.navitron.org.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3388....

Re: BEWARE! THE BANKS ARE OUT TO GET YOU!

Within certain limitations HSBC's low end business account is free to use, outside of introductory offers most others charge for business accounts. Including Barclay's, Lloyds TSB and that Australian bank next door to the Railway Hotel (or what's left of it). The CO-OP bank do a free business accoun...

The wife is wondering what she's going to do, she's secretary of the Majestic church and she puts the collections and offerings in over the counter every week at HSBC. Re: BEWARE! THE BANKS ARE OUT TO GET YOU!

I need an affordable way of a few customers a month to pay me for my services. Cheques over the counter at HSBC worked. Accepting card payments is a non starter for the same reason that most small businesses don't take them. Cash is fine except I need to get some of it into my account to pay the bil...

Give it a day or two Stanley, mine occasionally gives problems, but it normally rights itself. Its usually the server your machine is set to look at for updates that is on the blink.

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Ground source heat pumps (what some people mistakenly call geothermal) use electric at maybe 3:1 energy gain which brings it nicely in line with normal gas heating on a cost basis. Of course gas heating doesn't refrigerate your garden........ (Somebody somewhere will be selling that as a benefit. ht...

We got some special expansion port blanking plates that you wound the mouse keyboard and monitor cables around before screwing them in, you needed to take the lid off the PC to make off with anything. It made changing something a real pain especially if the system box was on the floor.......

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Can you give a link Tiz ? I found electrically heated glass but its nothing to do with PV except perhaps you could use the output from seperate panels to heat the glass. But mounting PV panels which are normally opaque inside windows seems a little counter productive, or am I missing the point ? Pho...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Having done some research on solar PV panels, they aren't very sensitive to UV light (they are sensitive to IF to a larger extent) so putting panels behind glass won't have too much effect other than the losses introduced by having extra reflective surfaces in the equation. Most panels are made of g...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

I don't know about the solar panels behind glass, it would depend on how much of the ultra violet spectrum they use (window glass is opaque to UV). The old incandescent bulbs were something like 90% heat and 10% light. I made a photographic developing tray heater out of a 100 watt bulb inside an old...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Diesel engines nowadays are rated to the onset of black smoke, but the power continues to rise way past that point, so its quite possible to get a lot more power out than rated. Watch a tractor pulling competition, the engines are more often than not belching thick black smoke to get as much power a...
