I'm glad you are both feeling a bit better.

If only there had been available a safe and effective, fully tested vaccine, with regular follow up boosters to prevent such unpleasantness.

I've always assumed that to be the case. There are many such, and even one in Barlick  I liked Mosley Street - with perhaps my favourite building of all time - Central Library at one end in St Peter's Square, (Peterloo), and the childhood magic of Lewis's store and Piccadilly gardens at the o...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

I heard Matt Frei soeaking to Lindsey Hilsum on the radio yesterday. They are both world class foreign correspondents. They spoke of the lack of any press coverage in Gaza at the moment. They are signatories of a petition of fifty six such journalists which has just been sent to the Israelis, demand...

if the press are there. What is this "press" of which you speak? The best way to get a response is to video it yourself, and get it on social media I'd suggest. PS - Can you use a card at the shop? Almost no one uses cash where I mainly shop (Tesco and Aldi). The only cash I've us...

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY. TRIPPS ORIGINAL

From the commendable John Crace sketch in The Guardian today. - N othing shouts “Don’t panic! Don’t panic” more than a hastily arranged speech from the prime minister outside No 10 at 5.45pm on a Friday. Still, on the plus side, those who chose to carry on watching Pointless on BBC One won’t have mi...

Re: POLITICS CORNER

The phrase 'far right' is used a lot in these recent days. Used regarding Netenyahu's politics, probably justifiably, and mentioned in Sunak's Downing Street address last night. In that context I'd say it was included only to enable him to deny that Islam was the sole problem, which at the moment it...

Re: Seen in the News

The Prime Minister is to address the nation from outside No 10 Downing Street at 5.40 pm. That is in about twenty minutes time. That's unusual - short notice on a Friday evening - I'd say. :surprised: ********** Well he told us what he thinks is wrong but I didn't hear any meaningful solutions. This...

Re: POLITICS CORNER

I deliberately made no predictions, but I'm not at all surprised by the result. It all hinged on where the muslim vote went, and I had no clue as to where the whip had been applied. The fact that an independent came second with apparently no media exposure, tells me that if Labour had chosen a bettt...

Thanks for the tip off. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Tom Whipp has finally got a grown up haircut and David Whipp has declared it to be summer and changed to No. 1 Dress (Tropical). The big news of the day is the report into Wayne Couzens the ex policeman and rapist - now safe in jail. The report author is Dame Elish Angiolini, a long time member of the great and the good in Scotland. I have been aware of her for over ten years, and a google of the terms Angiolini , Holly Greig...

Re: Seen in the News

Sounds ambitious to me. How does it work in practice? Actually getting your kids to be more advanced than their peer group isn't always a good thing. My big lad was (is ) bright, and had to mark time at the big school to wait for the less able ones to catch up. He was transferred to another school t...

Re: POLITICS CORNER

It was the budget setting meeting in Oldham last night. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Mayor - not sure where the Mayor was, I'd have expected him to present and in charge. Strong party differences and mention of possible impending bankruptcy a few times. There was some mild fisticuffs, (not ...

Of the 15 members listed to ask questions at today's Prime Minister's Questions I noticed that one was from a Labour MP, one from an SNP MP, and thirteen were from male Conservative MP's.

Who chooses them? Perhaps it's Mr Speaker, who has gone a bit shy today.

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

We mentioned the word 'rhotic' a while ago and its connection to the Lancashire accent. I stumbled across this lady today who demonstrates, like no one else I've ever heard, (with the possible exception of Uncle Jim) the rhotic 'R ' sound. She speaks a lot of sense I'd say. What is a "white fun...

Yes it's a good piece on tomorrow's byelection. we all deserve so much better than what we are getting from these political 'leaders'. That's just what Galloway said yesterday. He says now - in contrast to when he said 'lend me your vote' - that he will stand again in the General Election, and he fu...

I've just seen this elsewhere (in 'The Mill actually) The big story: Rochdale on the brink - Top line: The by-election in Rochdale this week isn’t the only story in town. Far from it. The future of Rochdale AFC, the town’s 117-year-old, fan-owned football club, is in peril. Without a £2m cash inject...

Military officers and senior soldiers have said they will quit the Army in droves over new accommodation rules. Already referred to in Quote of the day. " PS Apparently this is an actual quote from the 2i/c of the Army. Britain’s second most senior general has said she wants to see less hierar...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

It's the staircase from Lewis's shop in Manchester. I pinched it from a Manchester history site on Facebook, which I enjoy a lot. It rang an immediate bell with me as I remembered queuing up those stairs, for what seemed like an age, to see Father Christmas. That must have been around or before 1950...
