Re: Marine Engineers

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35830563 Interesting report. It says that they do not consider anyone responsible. As an ex chief engineer, I see the responsibility lies squarely at the Chief Engineers, Master, and First Mates feet. The ship was obviously not fit to go underway. A lot of people do not re...

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012

Stanley. I have a theory in answer to your question. It may have been easier for bricklayers to build square chimneys. The maths involved in building a round chimney, I would think is greater than building a square one. At the end of the day it comes down to cost. Answers on a post card please to......

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012

I was looking back a few pages ago, and I was thinking about the drone filming the Durban stack felling. I was wondering how much use is made of drones on stack inspections.

Re: Marine Engineers

I understand the complication Ian. The point I was making is that it was not neccesary to stop the attendees parading. Like you say there are enough younger Merchant Navy pesonnnel to carry out the more technical monouvres.

Re: Marine Engineers

Stanley, I am pretty annoyed at the report. They wer'nt prevented from marching at the cenotaph, they were prevented from parading at the festival of rememberence. Usually at the Albert Hall. Still shows poor form from the powers that be who are in charge of the British Legion. Over the coming days ...

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012

That's great photo of Peter. With his Capstan Full Strength too. (Ronnie smoked Senior Service cigarettes, and had the same pose when he was working on stacks). Taken in the winter. I bet it was absolutely freezing on top of Ellenroad stack when the photo was taken. Typical Peter pose, Ronnie had th...

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012

Stanley, I have been looking at your recent posts. The thing that strikes me is the casual manner the jacks pose for the photos. FDR once said that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. I personally have climbed more stacks than I care to remember, with the assistance of my stepfather Ronnie Bam...

Dee mill was not in Newhey/Milnrow. It was always in Shaw. I remember Ash mill, what I don't see on the map is Freds, (Dibnah), Briar, the stack he brought down brick by brick+

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012

Strange, On one of my visits back I noticed Coates, had purchased all the houses on Ellenroad Street, that must have cost them a small fortune. There used to be chicken pens and garages on the other side of the perimeter wall. They obviously preferred a more central position for building their facto...

I didn't know that when they demolished Ellenroad, they left the perimeter wall intact. Was this done for any particular reason, or just for security?

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012

Stanley,
The painting shows the prefabs on Hawthorne Lane, and New-Hey county school. The prefabs were built as temporary housing just after WW II, Temporary, they where still inhabited until 1965, when they built brick bungalows to replace them.
