Re: Wildlife Corner

Very pleased to confirm the sighting of a greenfinch today on the feeders.

This is the first I've seen for certain for several years, the population crashed because of a fatal infection (bacterial, I think) usually spread in areas of high numbers, for example around bird feeders.

Re: Wildlife Corner

Same seems to apply to Ants ( having disturbed in Error two nests in different places - armful of formic acid !) A local hedgehog has been eating the cat food outside the back door including the dry cat food. I am not sure this is good for the hedgehog (and give that the houses surround gardens but...

Bibby's didn't do pet food but some cans were army emergency rations. Mostly vegetables and puddings. Hopefully not the canned cheese, anything but the canned cheese ! That stuff wouldn't melt, even in the oven ! The oatmeal "biscuits" and canned jam were quite nice, though Most of the ra...

Re: Wildlife Corner

This year, for example, two breeding pairs of greater spotted woodpeckers, several members of the tit family and at least two pairs of goldfinches, blackbirds, robins, wrens and chaffinches make up most of the rest. This year I seem to have acquired some house sparrows ... That's great, well done! ...

Re: Wildlife Corner

I have an enormous garden and attached bit of mixed woodland, rural and about 800/900 foot up in SW Northumberland (so not actually local to Barlick!) When we first moved in, over 20 years ago, the garden was neglected and overgrown and the bit of woodland didn't exist. I did my best to improve thin...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Looking closely, I can see two funnels and sets of mechanical rods. So I assume one was for each screw.
I had thought one engine would be propulsion and the other turning the weed cutting screws.

Another look and I see the tow bar between the bits, on the rear of the foredeck.

IIRC there was a theory that "Spinners" were for higher speed passenger services, something to do with larger driving wheels whereas goods trains needed haulage power at lower speeds and so had smaller, coupled wheels. here's a "Stirling Single" NER 50 built 1870 (or spinner with...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Seen something similar at Whitehaven Marina's Sea Lock, more than once.

Usually resulting from the remains of a storm surge plus highest spring tides, the lock was full which resulted in the inner lock gates being over-topped. (But not the outer gates, which are 12m vs the 8.4m of the inner ones)

My knowledge of Avonmouth post-dates this picture - when the "modern" grain terminal / handling plant was installed my father was involved in both design and commissioning the mechanisms for unloading the ships. This would have been in the 1960s / 1970s I think However, in the 1950s my fat...
