Re: Marine Engineers
We sailed by the site of the Titanic disaster, Very poignant to me. It was sad to hear a couple of days later, that the wreck was deteriorating, extremely quickly. Apparently the main staircase had finally collapsed. Perhaps in another hundred years there will be nothing at all left of her. Especial...

I know Appledore very well. Having worked on their engines. Medium speed. Sewing machines. So quiet relatively speaking.
Reassuring to know they have been salvaged from the brink.

Re: Marine Engineers
I did a Trans Atlantic crossing recently on the Q M 2. New York to Southampton. Strange feeling to be part of the cargo for a change. What a marvelous ship it is. Three captains and a Commodore, Four chief engineers, one on each watch and one overall chief, Superintendent. Totally bridge controlled,...

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012
Stanley Read the topic on harmonics. Strange, when marine engines are running, they produce a hum. The harmonics, a beautiful sound. Whenever that sound is interrupted you know something is wrong. Even the sound of a pump or compressor starting changes these harmonics. Its the engines talking to you...

Hello all.
Its that time of year again.
To those who go down to the sea in ships.
At the going down of the Sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

Re: Marine Engineers
Thomo,
I was with Ellerman Lines, the City of Banarres was a beautiful ship, a twin funneled steamer. Ellermans never built another twin stack ship after that terrible incident. A German Submarine torpedoed it when it was carrying child evacuees to Candada. The innocent victims of war.

Ronnie Bamford, or some other jacks, I cant remember now, removed the drum from Garfield not long after the photo was taken. Five years later the mill was demolished. The steam engines where literally torn apart and sent to the scrap yard. Garfield was still using mules when it closed.

Yes it wasn't a good idea to call Dennis "Piggy" but if ever you met him you could understand why he was nicknamed Piggy, I don't think it had anything to do with him producing Pigs. Back in the day Dennis used to drive a Vauxhall Viscount, that was a top of the range motor car then. Denni...

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012
Its actually 1963. It was taken from Ladyhouse Lane railway bridge. The building on the right was shared between Peter Tathams Grandfather and Ronnie Bamford to store ladders and Steeplejacking equipment. It was also partially used by Dennis (Piggy) Hughes to store Pig food. Denises pig stys are jus...

Re The above chimney with the superfluous crack.
I think a bit of red mastic and a few rubber bands should do the trick!!!
Perhaps Robert Aram might be interested in adopting it.

Re: STEEPLEJACK'S CORNER 2012
The Architect would have defined the stacks shape not the builders. It appears to me that the Architects in the Preston area obviously preferred square chimneys. There is also the fact that the architects used to design chimneys based on european styles, as in India Mills, Campanille (Bell Tower) de...

Re: Marine Engineers
Stanley, They don't have to gauge weight just look at the plimsoll line. They didn't even bother to check centre of balance for which they could have compensated with water ballast. Poor form all round I say. The probability is that the first mate asked the chief engineer to trim the vessel by balla...
