Re: Shed Matters 3

I didn’t spot that one Stanley. I must have been asleep! Nice progress, I am certainly pleased with my 10H.

Yes, I see, the eccentric is outside the bearing so could slip on. Either way will work of course.

Re: Shed Matters 3

That is interesting, Stanley. Stuart must have changed the instructions/drawing since I bought my castings. I had probably had them over 10 years, buying them when an ebay dealer was doing a special offer. I picked them up from a mill near the canal here in Rochdale. The guy was a bit of a wheeler d...

I have seen a few 10H engines assembled with the valve chest on the opposite side to that shown on the drawings.

Re: Shed Matters 3

Whilst you were working with cast iron parts we visited Darkhill Iron Works. 37DAC2CD-D1A6-4981-8F36-11B552946FAA.jpeg I don’t think that enough is made of the work done there by Robert Mushet to improve the quality of iron and steel that we all use. Darkhill was founded by David Mushet in the early...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I fabricated my crankshaft. Before cutting the through shaft I pinned the joints then silver soldered it. I am a bit of a silver solder junkie🤪.

Re: Shed Matters 3

I found it, thank you.

That casting kit looks good Stanley, first problem is to break into the shrink wrapping🥴, pretty easy after that.

Re: Shed Matters 3

I have found it now and replied. I can’t find the email that would have told me that I had a PM. It isn’t in any inbox, spam or junk box, very strange.

Re: Shed Matters 3

Oh, yes please to the Vulcan pump. I will set us up a complete second test system that is capable of going up to 450psi. That will cope with small gas tanks as well as boilers. We think that the pipes on our current system are only rated to 400psi and being old they could fail anyway. At least on a ...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Stanley, that is a very nice piece of kit. We could certainly put it to good use, thank you. That range is higher than we have at present. It would allow us to test model gas tanks which we can’t do at present.

Re: Shed Matters 3

I’ve been doing a bit of paint on the duchess before refitting the boiler ready for hydraulic test. Today I must go to the track and return the boiler test pressure gauge. It has been stored in my workshop all winter to protect it from frost. We lost a good gauge a few years ago when it froze up and...

Re: Shed Matters 3

The Stuart 10H is now finished. I had 3 attempts at the cylinder cladding, the drawing was 4mm short or did I not take enough off the port face....

Re: Shed Matters 3

Nice work Stanley, as you say, steady does it. I use a large anglepoise bench magnifier as below. Over the years I have had to change the circular fluorescent lamp in it for a modern led unit. Luckily I found one that would fit with just a bit of fettling and for only about £12. I got this from a wo...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Progress on the 10H might have seemed quick but I have been working on it for the 3 months of lockdown. Like you, I drilled the piece of blackened aluminium yesterday but I am not pleased with the fixing hole spacing. I have made a new pattern in mild steel and will clamp that to a piece of 20thou” ...

Re: Shed Matters 3

My Stuart 10H passed first run test today. It was a bit hesitant to start but did run. Then I realised that I hadn’t put the drain cocks in so the cylinder was a bit well vented. It ran much better with the cocks in and shut Next job is to fit the cylinder lagging. 76135941-6DB4-4577-A790-1CD826AD1F...

Re: Shed Matters 3

First trial assembly of the 10H. It turns over OK if a bit stiff but that is fine. Now I’ll take it apart for painting. The fixings supplied don’t match the drawing, a bit more head scratching.

Re: Shed Matters 3

First kit for the traction engine has arrived. I’ll finish the 10H first. There will be plenty of work in this kit. The front wheels and hubs are here. Spokes are laser cut and will need all the edges breaking, not just for nice appearance but to get the paint to take evenly. F7132A56-0AB6-4A4A-8AA2...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Yes, Stanley, I am sure I started with the standard. It is the basis of the engine. Of course on any other we would probably start at the sole plate and work upwards, same thing really. Looks like a nice casting. I have seen lots of comments recently that the cast iron parts coming out of Stuart’s h...

Re: Shed Matters 3

I built one of those a few years back, you’ll enjoy it Stanley. My daughters gave me the casting set for one of those ‘milestone’ birthdays. It makes a nice little engine and certainly runs at a good pace. The wobbling cylinder magnifies the impression of speed. Like many good ideas it is simple but...

Re: Shed Matters 3

Those are looking good Stanley. Work in Rochdale stopped this afternoon when the lathe made a terrible rattling noise. The problem is the primary drive belt to the intermediate shaft. It is a toothed ‘synchro’ belt which has stretched and was slipping on the motor pulley, no adjustment provided. A q...
