No accounting for taste. When we moved into our house over 30 years ago someone had painted the banister and newel posts whitish. Spent hours striping it off to find some very expensive spanish mahogany underneath. Just sliding your hand over it was worth all the effort.

Unfortunately I know mine are El Cheapo soft wood underneath. I capped the road safety barriers we used as railings at Ellenroad round the engine with genuine mahogany bannister rail. All they needed was beeswax and 000 steel wool.

Mine is only softwood, it cleaned up OK :-)
