In all honesty chaps- when you see a stack with frames round, or a good baton stage , there is only one winner, aesthetic wise!!!!

Back in today Tom?

Stages always looked better with lollypop stick scaff boards  ,it was a treat using 8' boards instead of the usual 18' :surprised:

It was a good scaffold and got plenty of work........ One funny story about it. I had no measurements for the original height of the drum so I asked Peter if the battens were on the same level as when he worked on the stack when the drum was intact. He said yes so I asked him to think back whether he could see across the top of it. He said no, it came to about the middle of his forehead so I stood him next to a vertical scaffold pole, added 1" for shrinkage over the years and marked the height with a hacksaw on the metal pole. When we finished the head, stripped the scaffold and compared how it looked with an old picture it was perfect!

I've used this pic in this week's article. Thought it was worth posting it here. Higgy and Berger at Salford Destructor chimney demolition in 1979. Tow good lads, both died young.

Not only that Bodge. If you look carefully at Higgy's left arm it's in plaster. He had broken it falling down a hole on the way back from the pub while he was with Peter on his Gloucestershire contract where they lived in a caravan on site. Didn't stop him going to work.... They don't breed 'em like that today.

Reinforced by the fact Higgy used to spit on Andrew when he was above him on the ladder. I can still hear Andy's plaintive cry "Peter! He's spitting on me again!"

Salford Destructor demolition 1976. Peter Tatham first, Higgy below him, then Andy and Daniel Meadows trailing on behind. First time he had ever climbed a stack.

Tom. tried enlarging it but not good enough quality to see what was strange about the bosun's chair. Looks complicated.....

The only strange thing about a bosun's chair is.... the bosun's chair itself! It's all climbing ropes, abseiling, seat buckets, plastic seat harness's etc! What is all that about? I'm all for technology and moving forward- but is it? These days, it's all about forgetting the past! Move on by all means, but embrace the old, tried and tested methods! Ok, rant over, now for something from the past that is never forgotten or ignored- beer!!!!!!!
