Grockle, Steeplejacks Corner Part 5 is on this link:
http://archive.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/ ... IC_ID=8879
and you'll find that the first post in it has a link to Part 4, and so on as you go back through them. Stanley might be able to give help with accessing photos.

Tiz is right. The pics are in the text and much of the old archive is accessible.

Used to enjoy reading the old steeplejacks corner and occasionally posted in there, mostly to ask what probably seemed like stupid questions!

Lost my user details somewhere along the way so re registered.

I was sorting some old slides yesterday and came across this one for the demo lads. It was at a Cat distributors in Los Angeles. The smallest and the biggest in their range.

Perhaps this will raise a response.....

Two facts about New York. First is that the reason why it's possible to erect skyscrapers is that the Manhattan Schist bedrock is a superb foundation, it is very hard and stable. Second; contractors in the city cater for 'side walk superintendents' by making viewing platforms. Add to this the fact that I am a professional nosey bugger when it comes to interesting matters like this and you get what follows. It was in 1980 and I was fascinated by the fact that the owner of a low rise building had successfully resisted the efforts of the developers of the new skyscraper to dislodge the established restaurant.

Image

Problem for the contractors was that they had to do heavy work, including blasting the bedrock right up to the old building.

Image

They drilled for the shot-firing and inserted the charges than laid very heavy 'chain mail' mats on top of the area to be blasted.

Image

This is the moment when the blast was triggered. A dull thud and the several layers of mat jumped up in the air. They dragged the mats off and underneath the rock had been shattered and could be dug out by the excavators. I was struck by how competent this was. We went in the restaurant and had a meal and the waiter told us that all they noticed was the cutlery ratting occasionally! I'm not certain but I have an idea this was the new Trump Tower but might be mistaken.

Hi Stanley, seems like the Steeplejacks Corner thread has died a death since the format was changed. I don't know if you are aware, but the entire SC1 and SC2 are not accessable anymore, and only the first page of SC3 is there. That means most of my, Bob's and Victor's, among a few others postings are lost, including all the historical research i did. A great shame.

Colin, for reasons I won't bore you with we lost a lot of the old data that was online but Doc has it all on a pen drive in his pocket. Problem is converting it to the right format to reload on the archive. It's all there and will be done eventually. It will return!
Thanks for that Robert, I didn't know about it. Funny they never mentioned the blokes who rescued it... Ah well, Yesterday's Men!

Bob! Nice to see you popping in. You've found the current forum obviously.
LINK will get you to SC part five. Problem is that Doc still hadn't cracked getting the whole of the archive back up. At the moment Pluggy is taking over running the site from Doc because he's bought a boat and is going to sail round the world.... Once Pluggy has cracked moving the whole site over to his server he'll be looking at getting the full archive back on line. See the topic, 'The time has come'.

Bob, see the link above. That has links to the earlier versions but none of them go back more than about three pages at the moment. That's the problem that has to be solved.

For an earlier version of high steel working look for Lewis Hine's pics of building the Empire State Building. Many of the high steel men were Native Americans, Cherokee tribe I think.

Personally i think its all bull about Mohawk indians, obviously they did have a big part in the steel erecting game in the usa,but New York?????,the empire state building was built buy Irish and latinos, they would wait in line each morning hoping for a start and all day hoping that someone would fall so they could have there job.
