Trimmed back all the plants in the front yard, I have no iea what I'm doing but it looks a lot tidier. They have grown back for the last 7 years so I must be doing something right.
On a different note, my Dragon Tree doesn't look very well. It's 32 years old and the leaves are going brown and dropping off, I'm guessing it's old age and will replace it with a new one...

Is it in a pot? Try giving it a shock by re-potting it and loosening the root ball up.
My front garden just sits there looking desolate! Must cut the Lilac back where it pokes through the fence line when we have a dry day.

Not quite `gardening' but it's good to see that new plants are still being found that might be saved from extinction and could possibly provide new medicines...or even garden plants!

I heard that report about Kew Gardens Tiz and once again marvelled at the fact that dedicated people all over the world are ferreting out new information about very old things. It makes the seed bank in Svalbard even more essential!

Good display of Snow Drops. We must have just the right type of soil where they do very well.

Oddly I took a picture of some snowdrops yesterday. A bit wilder than yours, but doing well.
I doubt it's the same growing conditions - just a good year for snowdrops.

One of the things I noted when I was tramming all over the country driving tramp was that with the exception of the higher ground at Deerplay and Bacup, Barlick had a later spring than anywhere else I ever went. The North of Scotland had daffs in bloom long before us. Even so, this year we have Crocus and those very small Daffodils in flower on the Green. The bigger Daffodils are budding and won't be long now.
No sign of movement in the front garden and it is about this time of year when I annoy everyone by gathering the mint stems up together and burning them.
I remember once going to the Mull of Galloway and being stopped by snow drifts on Shap. I had to go back to Kendal and out to the west onto the the coast through the Lake District to avoid the snow. On the Mull I stopped for a pee and there were bees buzzing in the briars at the side of the road. They never had any winter there!

I had my small fire the other day and burned most of the mint stalks. The rest can stay there and gradually incorporate in the soil. I shall make a decision in March about the final pruning of the Ladslove.

Sad to say one of our beech trees was becoming dangerous and our local arborist declared it unsafe. Being subject to a TPO the council man came to examine it and agreed it would be wise to take it down. This sequence of images tells it own story.

.Image

The tree had developed a hole completely through it where the heartwood was rotten.

Image

. Its also had a substantial lean on putting the trunk under stress.

Image

Work starts on clearing the branches.

Image

Its down with a couple of ton of wood on the shrubbery .

Image

Cutting up. One of the Stihl saws had nearly a 3ft blade.

Image

Job done. All nice and tidy.

Far better down P. Funny how people don't notice when trees are becoming potentially dangerous..... I don't have any on my estate but I got one felled in Barlick on a public car park recently and have just alerted David Whipp to another on the Green that is dying. When he's dealt with that one I have another for him in Valley Gardens. Too late when they have made headlines! Trees are like humans, they have a 'best before' date.....

Plaques, have you got any wood turner friends who'd like a bit of beech? I presume there are some good bits.

In my spare time? I used to do a bit of wood carving and finding a large lump was always a problem. As they dry out they tend to split and pull themselves apart. Some of the 'rings' are nearly 3ft diameter and 8 inches thick so at this point in time I keep walking round them pondering what to do.

If you haven't got a woodburner give it away. Either that or leave it for a wildlife refuge.....
The lilac in the front garden has an enormous amount of blossom this year. A lot of the mint has failed so far. I am waiting to see what happens.....

We seem to have lost all idea about woodland management and tree management. I would not know when a tree is diseased or dying to be unstable, and with some fungal or viral diseases cutting up in situ I assume can potentially spread the disease.

I like this vid that popped up as a recommendation. Stanley will need a bigger shed and bigger garden to try it though. Building a raised garden bed

The council tree man said that there are so many different virus's knocking about that unless you really have to cut into a tree you should leave it alone. Our TPO tree was just suffering from old age and had become dangerously unsafe.
