He did Gloria, he took the time to talk to Sparky and pat him, then let him graze for a while before he did the deed. No stress or anxiety at all.

But still one of the most traumatic things you have to do. I shot a dog once for David Drinkall. It wasn't mine but it still affected me.
I read your original post about your worry if you were ill and understand completely, those thoughts were going through my mind. Take things easy for a while, you deserve it. I was surprised how soon I got used to not looking after a dog after all those years, horses are far more demanding.

The old ponies were a constant worry and I had been anxious about them for years! Did I have enough feed, what was the weather like, rugs on or rugs off, too hot and no wind they would need to come in because of the flies, had the sheep knocked the electric fencing down overnight. All these questions and more were never far from my mind so I do feel a huge lifting of the load and a hint of freedom.

Good, and when you get the occasional doubt and guilt feeling just remember how hard it was and how much love you gave them. That was what Gillian Marsh told me when we put Big Jack down..... Whatever happiness you get has been earned!

No doubts or guilt over Sparky, regrets that I didn't save Dennis from his traumatic end by stepping in earlier but at least I learnt my lesson. Onwards and upwards!

We lost our dear sweet Lady this week.
Nearly 15 and a 1/2 yrs old, arthritis (on daily medication), body closing down.
We’ve pulled her back from the brink a couple of times this year, but this time I felt that it was all too much for her, so we did the right thing for her, but it was so *#!’:*! hard.
Here she is in her prime.

I'm sorry to hear that Cathy but glad you ended her suffering. I hope someone will be allowed to do the same for me when the suffering becomes too much. I'm sure you'll have lots of fond memories of her. Take care.

It's the hardest thing about animal companions Cathy... I think I have done it for most of my dogs. I agree with Peter, shame we can't do the same for people! Sorry you had to do it but definitely the right decision.

It's a while since I looked at this topic. How are you coping with the loss of your cat Cathy?
I'm still grieving for my ponies, the feelings of loss just overwhelm me at times. When it all happened I was dealing with Col's illness and everything that entailed but now there is a huge empty space in my life. However everything is so much easier and I try to focus on that!

I totally understand Wendy.
I still have moments when I expect Lady to walk into the room, or see her laying on my bed. I have a lovely photo of her in my lounge that I can see all time. I still say my usual good-night that I always used to say to her. I also sometimes give one of her cushions, that I kept, a quick cuddle when needed.
A couple of nights after we let Lady go, she came to me in a dream, looking her best, and told me that she was feeling stronger and that she had had throat cancer. It made sense because in the end she was only eating the gravy from her wet-food, and leaving the meaty bits.
I don’t ‘discount’ dreams because my father and grandma each came to me in dreams on the nights that they died. (That goes way back to when I was 14 and 16yrs old).
I miss Lady everyday, but I know, and hope that you do too Wendy, that we are all still connected, just in a different way.
Hopefully it will give you some comfort.

Would a small dog be of help - there are some in a rescue centre south of manchester, and no doubt some in East Lancs / Skipton area. Probably an older one that does not mind its own space, enough to be independent and companion at same time.

One of the local cats to mum - that shared afternoon sleeping duties under a tree at the flats with its companion house cat - got run over (its not dead), lost its tail - I presume it sat under a car that moved off

Wendy, that's how I coped with Jack exiting. Concentrate on the advantages (and the economic benefits!). I know it's hard but allowing a bit of selfishness to creep in is no bad thing. I reckon I can look after myself better with no distractions.

We have a large old dog, three cats, 6 hens and a duck, so plenty of companionship at the moment! Bruce the dog is coming to the end of his life, he must be around 14 and is losing strength in his back legs and seems anxious and confused at times.

I've coped well with the loss of much loved dogs and cats over the years, lots of sadness but life goes on. Losing the ponies has brought a big change to my whole life, especially at this time of year when I would have been involved with feeding, putting them out, mucking out the stables and feeding again from early morning till 10pm at night. It's a lot to replace!

Understood Wendy and I have enormous sympathy for you. Eventually you'll find you have filled the time. I do hope so. Dennis and Sparky were nothing to do with me but I still miss them. (And Jack!)
