Yes, you're right Cathy, that was ambiguous. I put them in before we went on our walk and so after the initial irritation from the drops he had plenty to occupy his mind. Actually he's doing very well, not scratching and sleeping like a log. His appetite is OK as well, only thing is that his stool is a bit liquid today but I'm sure that's only temporary. The Canaural Drops are very effective, it's just a time game. 3 weeks on drops, three weeks rest and then another 3 weeks to kill the eggs. Bit like Nit treatment.....

I wonder why she didn't prescribe Advocate drops? So much easier to apply a pipette to the back of the neck once than fuss with putting drops in the ears for weeks. One application and the mites are gone....

Because his ears are infected Wendy. The Canaural drops contain an antibiotic and also a steroid to reduce the irritation. One other ingredient actually kills the little buggers! (I looked the formulation up on the web....)
Canaural ear drops are licensed to treat infection of the outer ear canal in dogs and cats. Canaural drops contain a range of ingredients which between them cover the main types of bacteria, yeasts and ear mites commonly found. They also contain a medium potency steroid to relieve pain and itching. The oily formulation is good at loosening and removing waxy debris which tends to accumulate in ear infections.

Encouraging thing is he'll come to me when he sees me get the drops out. Then he growls at me.....

Don't beat yourself up about it Stanley, one of our gsds had some a while ago and we hadn't noticed. They cleared up really quickly with the drops.
There's always something going on if you have animals. We had two gsds, one horse and one farm cat 6months ago, horse and cat both gone either side of Christmas. Both very quick thankfully. It's just lovely to have had them in our lives.

Sorry to hear about your cat and horse Gloria, was that the three-legged one? What went wrong with your horse? I know it won't be long till I have to say goodbye to mine and though I will miss them and dread the day it has to be done, part of me is so looking forward to the freedom it will bring!

No we lost the three legged one a while ago now, this was her brother. The horse had a stroke of some sort, she was fine in the morning, went out into the field later in the afternoon and she was on the floor, not in any visible pain, just couldn't get one half of her rear end to function, totally paralysed. Vet came, there was no way we were going to get her up so the decision was made. The vet didn't think she was in pain, she wasn't colicking, and she was almost 25yo. , so for a horse she'd had a good innings and was fine until this.

Glad to hear it was quick and a straightforward decision. Mine are now 32 and 36 and going strong. The 36 yr old has developed a slight heart murmur and the 32 year old cant cope with hay any more due to his lack of teeth but he has eaten well on chop and soaked beet all winter.

The horses are a credit to you Wendy..... It's a fair age. I think I once read about a gelding that reached 40 years.....
Jack is very comfortable with his drops, eating and sleeping well.

Jack has a sleep over with Jackie tonight but I haven't told him......

He never got his sleep over, he was back home with me at 20:00 last night....

Jack seems to be quite enjoying his ear drops.... He comes to me as soon as I get the bottle out. I have cut his dose down to one treatment a day on the grounds that twice might make his haematoma last longer because that's when he shakes his head and that was what caused it in the first place. He definitely has less irritation from the mites.

Jack is very deaf at the moment. I have had to put my shepherd whistle on a string round my neck so it is instantly available. He seems to hear that OK and answers well to it. I am worried in case my neglect of the mites and the subsequent infection has permanently damaged his hearing. Time will tell.....

Is it possible that the ear drops have softened any wax and bunged up his ears?
Just looked it up and ear drops could be the culprit but not for the reason I suggested.

Perhaps you should ring the vet and report this side effect and get her advice.

Interesting article China, thanks for drawing my attention to it. However, he was going deaf before the drops were started, that's one of the things that alerted me eventually. I shall bear it in mind. We go into a 3 week remission from the drops this week before a final blast to kill the eggs. I shall keep careful watch....

Took Bruce to the vets last Thursday for his booster and a check up but the vet found that his back teeth were causing a problem so he is booked in today for some dental work. Poor soul, he didn't understand why there was no breakfast!

The only saving grace is that his short term memory is limited. The first bit of kindness like a hug or his tea will wipe it out......

True! He trotted off with the nurse very happily....probably thinking that she looked kinder than his owners and would definitely give him breakfast.
Feeby the fluffy cat had a visit to the vet on Saturday morning for an antibiotic injection as the infection in her nasal passage has flared up again. We think it is linked to the lead shot which is lodged somewhere in there.
Wednesday I collected 4 months supply of Dennis's very expensive drugs to control his Cushings......its going to be a big bill at the end of this month!!

Bruce has survived his day at the vets with 5 teeth extracted. He's very perky but is sleeping it off now.

I've been tidying Dennis up a bit!

Jack is resting from the ear drops now and is as bad-tempered as ever. He's grumpier than I am!

I think Jack's hearing has improved a bit after stopping the drops for 3 weeks.
