Not soft southerners at all Kev. I have a similar problem. My programmer is over 20 years old and whilst it's perfectly serviceable for my needs, it only supports one temperature which is whatever the thermostat is set at. I've found that 18C is a good setting because it allows for the fact the kitchen, where I spend most of my day, gets the benefit of cooking heat and the fridge. This means that the North facing front room is always cooler than ideal but I found the easiest way to deal with that is put a padded waistcoat on when I go in there of an evening for TV time.
The fact that I am not using any programming but am on demand 24 hours a day does mean that the temperature throughout the house is very stable. This regime works for me but I am a singleton and I recognise that somebody else might have a different attitude!

I imagine a wireless thermostat would suit your lifestyle. Even if it was set at just one temperature you could leave the boiler on 24/7 and just take it with you as you move between rooms...

Ours is on all the time as well Kev. Our bills are more or less the same as Stanleys as well.

Aye. Mine is effectively on 24/7 just different temperatures throughout the 24 hour period.

Same here, and with individual radiator stats so we can also have different rooms at different temperatures, but raise or lower that room's temperature whenever we want.

Today's tip. Beware embarking on any enterprise that demands the purchase of central heating equipment in winter. :biggrin2:

Attending a seminar on the subject he asked how many people had suffered any sort of injuries etc; The answer was 'no known cases in this area'. Reluctantly he changed them over to electric fires which were far more expensive to run.
local HA landlord is reverting back to community gas generation bolier piping hot water around for heating. Past systems elsewhere have been uncontollable and expensive to maintain. Electric can be provided as well - we have had economy 7 storage heaters - even the modern ones I find dont work well.

When you have a minute, check that your central heating boiler is programmed to run in 'economy mode'. This is a programme setting that inhibits the ability of the heating programme to respond too strongly to demands on it. This means that it doesn't react as fast but if you are running things sensibly this is no problem. (Particularly if the system is on demand 24X7.)
This came to my attention again when I noticed that an empty house in the street still has its heating on and from the plume of exhaust steam is quite obviously on high demand, the level normally only supported when running for hot water like a shower. There's nobody in the house so it must be heating only.

This last twelve months has been very instructive. I begin to think that the best defence against Covid 19 is to be used to solitary living and it's an advantage if you are slightly anti-social in terms of not enjoying crowded places or close confinement with others. I'd hesitate to put this forward as a tip, it might be a bit too radical for many. Circumstances dictated this for me and on the whole I think I have made a good job of coping with it. I certainly believe it cuts back on infections, I know it's dangerous to do this but I must say I haven't had a common cold for so long I can't remember the last one.

I'm sure you have all heard the life style gurus giving us advice on the best way to live our lives to manage the pitfalls of modern living. Common tips are to have regular routines and meal times. Get to bed early and at a regular time and have as close to eight hours sleep as you can. No caffeine after noon, as near teetotal as you can manage and avoid any kind of excess.
The scary thing is that I can tick off everything they advise...... :biggrin2:

If you need to defend your fishing grounds against foreign trawlers, send in gunboats!

This is looking like a re-run of the Icelandic Cod War. (1958 to 1976) Cod War Which incidentally we LOST. One of the problems was that when push came to shove the trawlers were much stronger built and could withstand and 'accidental' collision. Of course Johnson and Gove will be too young to remember that fiasco.

Never buy a woman lingerie unless you are very sure of her size or she is with you and can try the items on for best fit.

Routines are a fine thing and I believe in them. However, when we have weather as wet and gloomy as we have at present, the sky does not fall if you stay inside warm and dry! I feel guilty for not going but thankful that now I have no dog so I am not forced to go out to empty him!

I would go as far as saying never buy a woman lingerie, ever.
This is not a present for her, just you. ( be honest)
You may as well buy her an iron, or a deep fat fryer. She won’t want either of those and lingerie gives the same message.
(I say that as one who has suffered lingerie gifts).
Lingerie says “you are not desirable naked”, and “I need you to wear THIS or I cannot be attracted to you”.

Its a well known fact that most women look far more attractive when dressed in nice clothes also clothes maketh the man. What ladies wear under the top layer may be down to personal vanity or pure comfort. Not for me to comment any further. I know my place. :biggrin2:

Sorry Maz but Mary loved the fact I took an interest and you are quite wrong about the reasons I was buying it. In the case of Vera, my wife, I bought hers as well and again that was nothing to do with any comment on her. We were hard up and she wouldn't spend any money on herself so I had to do it. She always said I'd done the right thing and she loved the pure cotton underwear I found thanks to my friend Wendy (another Wendy) advising me. It was made in Glossop.

Fair enough. I always got confused by gifts of lingerie.
I think there is a distinction between underwear and lingerie. From what you described ( cotton), I guess your purchase was more on the side of underwear than lingerie? So more for daily use than occasional...
