I have just spent half an hour watching a lot of expensive fire brigade equipment being very busy doing nothing in Town Square. God knows why but it passed half an hour on! A very expensive high reach vehicle and all it did was allow a fireman to have a conversation with a man on the roof. I have an idea they might have suspected a fire in the flue at the Thai Cafe.
I believe it was more to do with the mental state of the man on the roof...

The people are not choosing to do low mileage, it's the effect of covid restrictions and people avoiding travelling long distances, working from home etc. They'll go back to high mileage again when the pandemic ends.

My son in law Muthomi has just sold his car as he doesn't need one for quite a while and got £1200 more for it than he paid. Evidently clean low mileage secondhand cars are at a premium because of a shortage of new ones due to the chip famine.

Yes, the S/H car market has had a massive price boost. The garage man said they can't get enough of them and they can't get new cars either. He's a main dealer for Honda, Citroen and MG but said a few weeks ago they had only 5 cars (total of new and old) for sale on the forecourt.

That's just teasing us Mick as we sink into a North Country Autumn. I remember waking up in a house once with an Avocado tree in the back yard and picking rights to next door's banana and orange trees and reflecting that it wasn't Barlick.... What do you do with Persimmon? Not a fruit I am acquainted with.

To be honest, we don't do anything with them. Although of course there's plenty of things you can do. I've eaten some and to me they have a taste similar to dates.
The trick is that they absolutely have to be soft and ripe before eaten.

We leave them for the birds, they make a good food source for them before Winter and I think their need is far greater than ours for them.
There's a circle of small trees at the front of the property which we have named "The Bird Home" in honour of a similar feature we could see from the back window of our cottage when we lived on Hollin Hall in Trawden. I spread wild bird seed in the middle of the ring of trees in Winter.

Nice..... I used to feed the birds when I lived at Addingham but haven't done that since I came back to Barlick. The terrace I live on seems short of birds. Probably because I'm not feeding them!
Just to cheer everyone up, I heard this this morning.... "56 shopping days to Xmas"!

Mick, you must get some interesting exotic plants growing in that patch from the seeds that the birds missed.
If we spread wild bird seed in our suburban garden there'd be dozens of fat pigeons parachuting in!

Returning to Persimmons for a moment...

There's an "old wives tale" that you can predict the weather from the seeds inside the fruit.
If the inside of the seed looks like a fork, the area can expect a mild winter; a spoon, a lot of snow; and a knife, bitter cold “cut like a knife” winter.

I know that you will all sleep easier knowing that :-)

I picked up a box of remembrance crosses for our Gill distribution this year. I also picked up the wreath for the Labour Party branch.

Hoping to get a break in the weather for the crosses next week. It should be a bit easier in the churchyard this year as it ahas all been mowed and strimmed. That should make it a lot easier to get round.

'These guys are old so we should be in better shape than them' was one of the comments made, by Division 1 basketball team Loughborough Riders, before they started the National Cup game against Doncaster Danum Eagles last week. Unfortunately for them that wasn't the case, they lost by 40 points. Doncaster Danum Eagles are a D2 team who have worked their way up from D3, they are managed and coached by my youngest offspring who gave up playing in the BBL to concentrate on his teaching career. He took over the D3 NBL team to 'keep his hand in' and still plays on the team. The 'old' comment refers to some of the team being in their early 30s, experience definitely had the advantage.

Set an alarm on your smartphone. I use it all the time, but just had to reinstall it, since went through a phase of refusing to switch off.

I use mine all the time too, I have one set for February to remind me to get a quote for my car insurance renewal. 23 days before it runs out is supposedly the best time to get the cheapest price.

I didn't know you could set it so far in advance. I'll look into it. I suppose eventually it would turn into a diary program.

Of course - I'd have probably forgotten what the alarm was for if I did that.
