Have a look at THIS. This RAF site tells you about the plane and what it's capable of. As for why it was doing it over Burnley last night, your guess is as good as mine.
The other thing that got me was the fact that Amazon caught me again with their cunning wheeze to have premium delivery selected in the small print. I missed it and my abrasives arrive today but have cost a fiver more than they should. No point complaining, they are in transit. This is the second time this has happened to me.

The surveillance plane left Burnley just after the match with Liverpool ended. Was there a terrorist threat? What can they see from 7000 feet? Questions, questions...

They probably just wanted to watch a football match! And with their equipment they could probably identify the individual players - and check who was in the audience.

I looked later and the same thing happened by the same (similar?) aircraft doing circuits over Humberside / Scunthorpe area. No idea - training would be my guess.

Could be ariel photography for the OS. The OS get notification of passed planning permission and do things like add roads, airels, etc when changes are made to the landscape, likewise for water management ( not that that has been done too well in the past - maybe looking for the Bowker Drain ?)

Just caught up with Stanley's helpful link to the RAF aircraft type. I'd never heard of it. Shadow R1

Doubt the Ordnance Survey aerial photography bit - it was dark I think, but who knows these days.

Assuming they are on our side - shall try not to worry about it. . . . .

PS Just looked where Waddington is - they weren't far from Home when I saw them. I'm still guessing training - with a couple of Liverpool FC supporters in the crew.

David, I agree with you about the OS I think they employ private contractors to do that and when they do they don't circle they fly a box pattern with parallel courses.

I still think it could have been in response to a concern about terrorism. As lockdown eases and people begin to gather in venues like football stadiums the threat returns.

This photo was taken at about 10.30am this morning of the the rowan tree in our back garden being bent over by the 50mph wind and rain. It's been battered like this continuously for 24 hours and the wind is forecast to last until late this afternoon. We're not in an exposed area and there are houses just outside the photo to the right. This isn't unusual for us now, we get winds like this frequently. It's not just the speed of the wind but their gustiness too that causes damage. The rowan was being thrown about violently when I took the photo.

A telling picture Peter. You make a good point about the unpredictability of the weather and the violence of short bursts of it. I know I have a 'thing' about our vulnerability in Barlick to a repetition of the July 1932 event that caused our flood but I don't see how we can escape an eventual repetition.

It didn’t deserve any points, we listened to it a couple of days ago, and gave up on it early on.

Nothing wrong with the song Gloria, par for the course as are most pop songs. Certainly didn't deserve zero points. That was more of a political statement against a nation than a song contests. Anyway, I would like to know what Australia has to do with it even though they didn't make the grade this year.

We are in 'Europe' that would take some shifting - just not in the EU.

We did get Nul Points at all, but just above us were Germany (still in Europe, and arguably the most important country in the group) who got only 3 points, and Spain only 6. Even the hosts Holland who paid for the whole bunfight got just 11 points.

Thw winner got 524 points.

I read that it started when the EBU wanted to test if a Europe wide simultaneous TV programme was possible. I'd suggest it has been proved to be, so lets stop it now. Not sure how Australia fit in, and Israel was a puzzle to me for many years too. I think money may play a part somewhere.

PS - How's this for a conspiracy theory - Italy is a country most likely to want to leave the EU, so they win to raise their liking for the EU. No me neither.
