I wonder who made that decision? I wonder who will have to adapt, the vehicles or the staff?

I heard a report about that and funnily enough came across what I think is the same operation in another context. It's for relieving sinus pressure and consists of placing a balloon in the sinus and inflating it until it cracks the bone and enlarges the passage.
That reminds me that my ENT man once told me that an old treatment for blocked sinus was to place a sharp spike up the nose and give it a smart tap to pierce the bone into the sinus. That would be cheaper......

Headline today from (whisper it) The Mail.

"Commuters' fury as Uber 'TRIPLES' fares as it reports 'significant' surge in demand during biggest rail strike in 30 years"

So - we have everything controlled instantly by powerful computers in real time.

The moral is don't get an energy Smart Meter - then they can't charge according to demand. It hasn't happened yet - but it will.

PS - Seems Black Cabs are not allowed by law to change their tarriff. So Uber are Capitalist (red in tooth and claw) and Black Cabs are Socialist (to each according to his need) . Never thought of it like that before - and how long before we have to say Cabs of Colour?

David..... That's THE MARKET doing what it does best, maximising profits for the capital holders. Think of them as the supermarkets and the individual black cab owners as the small shop keepers and you have it about right. Why do you think the Uber cabs are less tightly regulated then the Black cabs?
Incidentally I see that Uber are using the fact that they were forced by their drivers to give them some benefits and sick pay (as if they were employed!) as a selling point in their latest advertising campaign.
Meanwhile..... Read THIS and then hands up all who think this is a good government to be overseeing changes in Human Rights. :biggrin2:

Once again when a headline asks a question -the answer is almost invariably no.

Because if the answer was 'yes' - there'd be no need to ask the question.

The really big surprise is that they're not made from the Nobel Prize winning material graphene.

I used Autoseal in my motorbike tyres. Lasts the life of the tyre and prevents blowouts and catastrophic deflation. Peace of mind on the bike. I have experienced blowouts before I discovered that stuff. Blowouts on a motorbike are not to be recommended. :extrawink:

Funnily enough my local hero Jack Platt was reminding us a while ago of solid tyres on wagons which he said were fine. They never got flats. So I suppose we are just going back to first principles again.
One thing that isn't mentioned in the article as an advantage of pneumatic tyres is that on agricultural tractors you can fill the tyres with water ballast instead of air and this gives much better traction.

Autoseal remaind liquid in the tyre until activated by a drop in pressure or contact with the air. Rapid expansion then followed to stem deflation. The advertisement featured a sniper taking out the front tyre of a motorcycle doing above 80 mph. No loss of controll and a controlled stop.

See THIS BBC account of a report from the Resolution Foundation that gives the bad news that 'levelling up' will cost much more than was envisaged. It's a measure of how badly these areas have been treated over the years as the inequalities between the North and South have been allowed to grow. (And they keep telling us there is no such thing as the North/South Divide despite all the evidence to the contrary.)

I'm watching reaction in the US after the reversal of Roe v. Wade. More and more the US looks like a fractured country, I hope it doesn't spread here. I see that Nicola Sturgeon is trying to ensure that abortion clinics aren't targeted by activists in Scotland. (See THIS BBC report.)

Later.... I see the Palace is not going to make the findings of the enquiry as to whether Meghan, Duchess of Sussex bullied staff. They say that as the Royal family funded the process they can do this. Am I wrong in thinking that this is tantamount to admitting that there was bullying because if there wasn't there would not be any need to keep the findings secret?

She's also Russian and should be sanctioned immediately.

By the way - did you know that Jerry Hall who is about to divorce Rupert Murdoch had a grandfather who came from Derker in Oldham before he emigrated to USA. ? She was on 'Who do you think' a long time ago. This quirky memory is a curse sometimes.
**************************

Today's hot new topic is the Heinz - Tesco stand off. Tesco are not 'shelfing' heinz ketchup and beans and mayonnaise because they say they are being over charged for them. I learn today from LBC that Tesco make 3 - 4 % profit on sales and Heinz make 30%+.

I bought a bottle of Heinz ketchup from Morrisons on a delivery order. I thought from the website picture, that it was bigger than it actually was, but the size 460g meant little to me, and the price of £2.79 seemed about right. . It was half the size I expected.

Then I went to Home Bargains and found a giant bottle for about £3.20. I've looked into things briefly, and fond that Heinz use 'confusion matketing' as they give the sizes in grams and in mililitres. I'm sure that's to confuse us.

Here are the three bottles I now have . Left - 400ml 460g, middle 800ml 910g, right 1170ml 1350g.

It is undoubtedly the best ketchup, though Aldi's Bramwell product at about 65p is a temptingly acceptable alternative for budget conscious shoppers.

I now have enough ketchup to last for about a year, but it keeps perfectly well for that length of time. I'll inflict my thoughts on beans and home deliveries on you another time. :laugh5:

No, I didn't know that about Jerry Hall..... (She'll be able to buy Oldham by the time her lawyers have finished with Rupert Murdoch. :biggrin2: )
Pack sizes, I think you definitely have a point about using confusion as a marketing ploy. I suspect it is worse in any commodity that can be sold in plastic bottles because it is so easy to injection mould a different size (for the 50% more bargain offers.)
I agree with you about the shelf life of sauces based on vinegar. 12 litres of Lea and Perrins is my evidence on that score.
By the way, can you remember when Heinz discontinued Salad Cream for about a year then brought it back in at a higher price?

Discombobulation seems to be common tactic now among retailers, especially the supermarkets. We keep finding it cheaper to buy two small packs of a product rather than one twice the size. They're making it difficult for us to compare prices and work out value.

Tripps, a contributor to The Times says she has given up on Heinz tomato ketchup and buys the Tiptree brand. She claims it tastes more like tomato. Go rash and give it a try!

And look out if your supermarket changes it’s floor plan. They know you are looking for certain products, that you then have trouble finding, and
hope you will pick up new ones , on your way.

If you think Heinz is expensive -try Tiptree ! I've had their conserves now and then, since childhood, and they are hand made Tiptree in Essex, in small batches and very good, but pricey.

Here's the (almost) last word on ketchup. Bald Foody Guy Tomato Ketchup Since the best one Sauce Shop is available in Morrisons I got a bottle. He's right it's 'different class' and barely lasted a week.

I think the Heinz will last me for a long long time though.
