Some of these coins came from the same mint as the Sutton Hoo coins...

Re: Seen in the News
Interesting to note that the detectorist who found them did the right thing and reported them correctly under the Portable Antiquities Scheme as treasure. However a serving police officer was sent to jail for trying to illegally sell a dozen that he filched from the site.

Re: Seen in the News
There's a rumour in circulation that Paterson will be rewarded with a peerage for getting the government out of even more trouble. That can't be true can it?

Re: Seen in the News
The government has `refused to rule out' giving him a peerage - but there'll be an almighty row if they do.

Re: Seen in the News
There's hope - since neither of these two Jack Straw and Malcolm Rifkindhave been elevated, and they were found not guilty.
If, as is said, the call for an appeals procedure had nothing to do with the Owen Paterson case - we can confidently expect it to proceed then?

Why don't they go and glue themselves to the road at the end of MP's driveways or the railings at Downing Street.

Re: Seen in the News
See THIS BBC report about anti-vaxxers picketing schools, serving quasi-legal papers and in some cases accosting parents and children. If these people were taking photographs of the children they could be arrested. What they are doing is far more dangerous that this and so as far as I'm concerned the police should act.

Re: Seen in the News
I'm glad to see Gove's comment but why has he waited 4 years since the Grenfell Tower fire before saying it?
`Cladding: Why must flat owners pay the bills, asks Gove' LINK
Housing Secretary Michael Gove has questioned why flat owners should have to pay anything for dangerous cladding to be removed from their buildings. He said the government had a responsibility to help leaseholders - who were "innocent parties" - with the huge costs. Plans to make flat owners take out loans to pay for the work would be put on pause, he said. Mr Gove also said requirements for 24-hour fire patrols were "a rip-off".'..

Re: Seen in the News
All well and good Peter but tenants are still unable to sell and are still being charged for fire security where that has been put in place. As a vox pop of affected tenants revealed yesterday, whilst welcoming the Gove announcement they don't believe there will be any meaningful action. The whole Grenfell problem is a disgrace, still many tower blocks with dangerous cladding and no sprinklers. Sprinklers should be mandatory in such buildings but aren't.

Re: Seen in the News
I note that Pritti 'Orrible is blaming the French for the record number of migrants crossing the channel.
So reassuring to know that our interests are being looked after by talented professional politicians.
I have no doubt the French will be quaking in their boots.

Re: Seen in the News
Is there an emoticon or other symbol we could use to show when we're employing irony? Otherwise many of the posts on OG will convey the wrong impression!
I'm glad to see this plan has been kicked out - it's simply another of those phallic vanity projects...

Re: Seen in the News
The numbers crossing the channel in tiny unsafe boats has reached over 1000 per day. Apparently the government (Priti Patel) although worried about the numbers are really concerned that they may lose their lives in the attempt. Who is she kidding it was her suggestion that UK coastal patrols would turn them back mid channel so that if they drowned it would be in French waters. Also that she would introduce a bill in parliament to exempt crews from UK prosecution if they didn't save them. Quietly ignoring that it would be against it would be against international law not to do so.
Why are we worried about these illegals when we are killing our own population through Covid at over a 1000 per week.

Re: Seen in the News
I see what you mean Peter.... Perhaps we should insert a smile at the end of ironic statements.
Ken, that last line of yours looks as though it was posted by Bogbrush in Private Eye!
Otherwise. what you say is dead right. Are we still employing the commando to show us how to float nets to tangle propellers? Or are we supposed to have forgotten about him?

Re: Seen in the News
On most texting platforms that use smilies or emoticons, irony is normally indicated by an upside down smiley face. Unfortunately we don't have one in our smiley pack. However, we could maybe employ this one:

We only need it in the turkey flock and that's Xmas sorted! Hope you steer clear Wendy. Watch where you walk!
I note with approval that Azeem Rafiq: Lord Patel, who has taken over the hot potato of being chairman of Yorkshire Cricket Club said this in his first press conference. " Racism is not banter" As simple as that. Please God people listen to him.

It seems to be around every autumn now, the last lockdown lasted months. It arrives with the waterfowl and spreads from them.
