Looks positively tropical Sue and will be hot now if you are like Us.
Message for David. I have cut my hair. This guarantees that it will snow next week..... (Well not quite.... but it could be a rain dance.)

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Correction, I have missed the shed! I noticed that my friend Ian Capstick who lives opposite me in the back street was having a problem. It was a flat tyre on his van and he had to get to work because he had a delivery of ready-mixed concrete coming. His problem was that one of the set screws that holds the wheel on was seized. I lent him the tackle he needed to get the bolt out and gave him lots of unnecessary advice. He succeeded after a struggle and is on his way to work. Only a small thing but it's nice to be useful and have someone grateful for your help. Nice. It's buggered my shed but that doesn't matter.
I have a warm glow!

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
I got on quite a roll with Ancestry. Covered a lot of ground and much printing and scribbling went on. I was aware I was not sitting in the best position and was leaning over to my right with a big spreadsheet sat on a (camping)table. I had the table set at 90 degrees to my computer desk ( big enough to hold the spreadsheet). It seemed like a good idea at the time. Then the temperature dropped and I was aware I was cold, but too busy and too interested to stop and think about putting heating on. Forgot about lunch or coffee.
A bit stiff and sore tonight. My own fault. But gosh I got a lot done. I am anxious to get back to it tomorrow, but will take more care.
I think I got a bit carried away because I am covering old ground, but so many wonderful volunteers have now worked hard to transcribe more parish records. Bless them. Much appreciated. Filled in a lot of gaps.

More of a case of what I won't be doing today. Last year on a bit of a whim I bought a weeding gadget from Aldi to remove weeds from the joints in the paving. Tried it out last year and it worked Ok. This year I dragged it out again and within 3 minutes plumes of smoke from the motor. Check guarantee, one month over, drat! Smell at motor. Not the usual burnt wiring smell more like oil. I strip it down nothing to lose. Umpteen screws later with motor and gearbox separated the problem seemed to be a tight gearbox. Actually a nice bit kit. Oiled and greased and back together in stages checking motor at each stage. Final assembly runs smooth and appears OK. Problem, I've two screws left over which should have gone into holding the motor in position. So back on the back burner waiting for the next rainy day. Is it me??

More Ancestry this morning, warmly dressed! ( it is so easy for me to get so engrossed in what I am doing that I avoid creature comforts like warmth, food and toilet breaks!)
Today’s searches were not as easy as yesterday...once again I have too many Johns and too many Thomases! ( and more than a smattering of Mary’s and Elizabeth’s ).
So lots of double checking with birthdates.
I find it amazing how many people remarried people with the same first name! ( first wife Mary dies...find another Mary). So then you have to check which kids came from which Mary ( marriage dates not always helpful).
And such a lot of grandparents raising an initial brood of children whilst Dad and the “new” Mary/Elizabeth get on producing more. So many women were simply bred to death.

Indeed! And the amazing thing is that if they survived the child bearing years many of them lived well into old age, usually outliving their husbands.
So useful when the mother's maiden name is given to a child, usually a boy, as a forename. I've always said I'd like this to be mandatory in law. So many women lost their family identity.

Indeed they did.
But what a journey for many women. No birth control and no rights to say “NO”. Of course, if a woman got pregnant, it was all her fault, and often held against her. I fly a silent flag for these women.
( and yet...there were poor folk with large families and when you see that all babies survived, you have to take your hat off for these mothers. Wonderful women.)

Shirt number two finished, so easy second time around. And just for you Maz I have made sure the holes on the buttons all lie the same way, in this case horizontal to the button hole.

How long did it take to train Bob to stand to attention like that?

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
All the Hayter men stand to attention! Its taken me years to get Bob to relax more, note his left leg slightly forward in his model pose! fresh from my success we have sent for some more summer fabric for yet another shirt. I am quite liking this. Better than the yellow top, which by the way is definitely too big! As for a pot belly shirt, one way to resolve the issue is 8 weeks in lockdown in France, with manual labour being the main option on activity. Health wise we both benefitted considerably!
It was definitely too dangerous for a walk yesterday. Our main routes are either through avenues of trees are on the wild moors. The first presented hazards of flying branches, the second created the problem of actually standing up. We missed our 5 miles. I think it will be the same today.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
We were attacked yesterday by one of the large plastic trugs I use for gardening. It was in the back yard about a quarter full of weeds and other stuff but around midday it had emptied itself and was knocking on the back door! The wind creates a vortex out there and the trug was circling up to a metre off the ground trying to attempt a roof jump! When I opened the door it's original contents flew into the house and I had to send Col out to catch the trug in mid air!

I read somewhere that you have to stitch it using a wok instead of a mannequin...

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
My darling husband retired 7 years ago. He was retired for ONE DAY.
Then he had an offer to work from home for 2 days a week, and he couldn’t resist. Now he works 8+ hours a day, 7 days a week at his computer. He doesn’t eat much, but neither does he move much. I drag him out for a walk daily...best I can do.
He will be 71 in November.
I hate that “retirement” didn’t happen. On the plus side....he is happy...and doing what he loves. So I cannot complain, and there is nothing I can do to change things.
( his children say he will die at his desk)
I think I understand, because I have the ability to become totally engrossed in things too. I can work all day at something that interests me...

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Wendy, your post about your trug actually read in a funny way, but I imagine the event was anything but. Last night I heard a loud, quick smashing noise outside my place, had a quick look thru the windows but couldn’t see anything. This morning I found a roof tile smashed on the concrete path.
Hopefully no rain will get in before it is fixed.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
I heard a big bumpy smash in our last house one night during a storm, and later found a roof tile had crashed through our internal ceiling and was laying on the floor of our passage!

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
It was quite scary Cathy and I'm glad it was daylight so we could see what was happening. I don't like high winds at all! A sore knee is causing me problems at the moment ( too much kneeling in the garden probably), so I'm quite content to be on light duties in the house.
