Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Here we go Sue, this first picture is the King sized 3000 hex quilt and how Sally finished it, you can see and odd tie through at one of the junctions.
The second image shows another quilt she is working on. Edges of the hexes turned in and ironed then they can be stitched to the backing which in itself can then be hemmed, Hexes would retain their full profile with a thin border.
If neither of these are suitable for your design, Sally would recommend that you search "hexagonal quilts" on Pinterest / .com or .co.uk. If you don't have an account on there you can register for free, lots of ideas and project shares to browse.

It looks more complicated than building steam engines.... I shall resist the urge to buy a sewing machine!

Morning all
Well it was certainly another very wet day yesterday, needless to say no gardening was done. I did however do the washing and used my drier to dry it all , later I ironed so thats finished for the week. Today will be shopping at Bacup market followed by our Saturday breakfast of fresh croissants and coffee. Then its house cleaning. The market and the cleaning today being the reasons why I decided to do the washing yesterday ie Spreading the workload out.
The afternoon was spent in the conservatory which was much warmer than the house as I had had the drier on in the morning. I did a bit more hand quilting...no machine in sight Stanley, this is all old fashioned needle and thread stuff. I find it very relaxing. After Sally’s photos I now know my way forward, not quite the same method but similar. I am only doing small pieces of quilting as I am making a set of table mats, the backing being heat resistant wadding. This means I can do a slightly different method of applying the backing fabric but still using the hexagonal pieces as facings to the mats.
If the sun remains or indeed if it stays dry I will do some gardening today, planting out the rest of my veggies. I think the job will be a wet one. I need some more compost for my large pots for the runner beans, so once again I will use the man on Bacup market, and see what other plants he has to offer today. I like to support his business, and all the others on there
Have a good day, stay safe

We've got full sun and a clear sky here Sue, I hope you get some of it!
I'm sat down after almost 3 hours in the shed(!), my new policy of a shorter early morning walk might be paying off. But we'll see. Another short walk now on the green and then breakfast and post some pics.

Normal duties plus making and finishing small bits for the engine. A lot of thinking also, a lot is going on in the family at the moment. Nothing bad, just needs thought and careful handling.

Cleaned my window tracks...with a bleach solution...(Stanley would approve. My window tracks are now as clean as his coffee pot, sink, and toilet).

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Morning all
After a sunny start yesterday there was a hint of rain at lunch time, but it was short lived. The afternoon turned out sunny so we went to the other side of Rochdale in the car , over to Owd Betts. We walked up to Knowl Hill and down the others side, following the line of the windmills. We then cut back across the fields to our parked car near the reservoir, which is very low in water. It was about 4 miles, but the views were stunning, you could see the Derbyshire hills in one direction and the Welsh hills in another. It was possible to make out all the big towns and cities. It was a good walk rounded off with an ice cream at the ice cream van and a drive home in the car with the roof down. We had a BBQ for tea and sat in the conservatory to have a pre meal drink and then to eat. All very civilised.
Earlier in the day I did a bit of dead heading in the garden and planted out the rest of my chard, butternut squash and runner beans. They should have got nicely watered in overnight. Its sunny now but not meant to last
I did a bit more hand sewing on my patchwork table mats and thanks to Sally I now know where I am going with the backing. Today I shall cut out a pattern for a pair of jeans for me. I don’t need them, just another self challenge. I already have some fabric I can use to try out the fit but have sent for some cream linen look fabric for the actual pair.
Claire, Erin and Adam are calling round this morning to collect some boxes. They have started their packing ready for the move which they are hoping will be the beginning of August. Because of their visit I shall not do yoga.
So thats it for today, take it as it comes, as they say.
Take care, stay safe

Stanley I hope your family matters aren’t too serious and are easily resolved.
Looks like a nice day today, yesterday was much better than expected. It was lovely to see you our daughter Claire and family yesterday. They came to collect boxes for packing stuff . It looks like the move to near Bamber Bridge is moving forward rapidly. We told them to enjoy their packing and sorting! Erin is happy to go back to school next week for a few days a week so she can say good bye to her school teachers and friends. B goes to school.we have sent her big hugs from us and hope she has a good day. Otherwise, yesterday, I cut out the pattern for my trousers, found and washed some material for them, and also did a bit more hand sewing. Whilst sewing I noticed we had a European Hornet in the conservatory. I recognised it from our experiences in France. I have never seen one this far north.
Nothing much planned today. I have pilates this morning, and I need to prepare some art stuff for another Jeremy Ford workshop tomorrow morning. We also need to go to the post office as Bob has sold a camera lens (for more than he paid for it) on ebay. If it stays nice we will probably extend our walk from the post office and do a large circuit. Just going there and back is over two miles along the old railway, but we like to try and make a minimum of 4 if we can. I may contact our friend Kath to see if she wants any rhubarb, and we can drop her some off on our travels as she lives about another half mile or so beyond the post office
Have a good day everyone, stay safe

Re. family... It's a developing situation Sue. We will cope.
You've got another busy day planned, I admire that, I like people who have a timetable, they are the most productive. One of the worst indictments I have about some families and people is that they allow their lives to become chaotic.
I am on track, I have had a good hour in the shed and reached the point where as far as I know, I'm ready for fitting the valve gear. Pic later.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Just back from our walk. We caught a lucky break in the weather and struck sunshine.
Ancestry this morning, though not as interesting as yesterday’s effort. But I managed to tidy and sort through three folders ( my quick filing technique is to just shove things in the right folder, then come back and have a proper sort later. I stand at the billiard table for sorting, because it is a good height and very large. Plus, the sun coming through the big window behind my back is a treat at this time of year.)
Hubby is out mowing the lawns. Then it will be time for a cup of tea, and possibly back to our respective computers...

Morning all
Where does the time go, it was 6.00 pm yesterday before I knew it. Pilates takes up a lot of the morning as well as watering the greenhouse and chatting to my plants the cuppa after pilates runs into lunchtime and there you go its afternoon. We had our walk to the post office then round to our friend Kath clutching a bag of rhubarb. We had a good long natter at a good 2 m distance from the front door. Being alone, she had ‘bubbled ‘ with a friend, a friend who is a hairdresser like herself. A friend indeed who had cut her hair for her. I was so jealous!
On return I cut out my pair of jeans. As simple task it seems except I had to wash and dry some more fabric first as the fabric I was going to use was not wide enough by about 4 inches. Even Bob’s engineering head couldn’t manage to get the curved waist band to fit on the fabric. Cutting out finally achieved I set the dining room table up for this mornings art workshop with Jeremy Ford, and then it was 6.00 pm
There was one other little activity ticking over in the background. I had a personal message the other day from someone who said we had a DNA match and she was my first cousin once removed.looking at the technical data it was the closest DNA match I had had in two years. I clicked on to her family tree and as as so often happens there were just three people, her, her mum and her grandma. All called Needham, meaning the relationship was through my Mums side.
I could not imagine who, I thought I had it all sussed. It had to be one of the the three brothers as I knew the sister line was not a Needham. I decided it was the brother Joseph that no one really knew much about but a deal of research could not throw up a match. The implication had been that Needham was the maiden name of these three ladies but it was not. I eventually found the grandmothers marriage to a Trevor Needham, who I had never heard of. I found that he was the son of a second marriage of Mums eldest brother John, who went under the name Jack. I am in touch with Trish, Jacks only child, or so I thought. I tactfully compiled an email to be told by her that Trevor is her half brother. The only marriage I had for Jack was actually his second marriage. Eventually I tracked the first marriage down. Also a difficult task as his marriage registration is under Jack and not John.
I sent my contact the information and am waiting to hear from her. So the family have another cousin, Lindsey. Another research success. I do love a challenge
Its the double yoga a d pilates this evening. I shall spend the afternoon doing some gardening and washing garden chairs for a socially distanced visit from our friends Wendy and Keith tomorrow.
Oh yes, our lovely sad grand daughter came home from school very happy indeed. Apparently it was ‘awesome’. She was very tired which was so good.
Have a good day stay safe.

Here's this morning's progress in the shed. The valve gear fits and wags when you turn the flywheel but the acid test will come when I set the valve and ask it to run. But it's progress!

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Sue...one of my ancestors on Ancestry has “our Jane” living and dying within 12 months of her birth. No she didn’t! I have traced it backwards and forwards with baptism/marriage/census/ church records/ deaths/ checking to see if they had lost a previous child and renamed another by the same name ( a common thing)... and I think it was a typographical error. Because “they” spring from a sibling of “our Jane”, it possibly wasn’t worth tracking a sibling of an ancestor for them, but I feel like waving a little flag and saying “hey! We are here”.
My advice is -trust nothing- do your own research.
This is why Ancestry gets so very intensive. Do not trust that others have actually found the way. Some things are blatantly obvious, but be prepared to dig for days if things don’t add up.

I might have a rest from the shed and read up Watt's Parallel Motion.... I shall attack it the same way I did the valve gear. It all becomes obvious when you have the parts in your hand but even then, it's tricky. I never got the Whitelees engine better that within 1/8"!

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Morning all
I have a checkup, as does Bob, booked for August 3 rd I think, plus an examination of the menacing tooth. Apparently that is their first appointment week, as safety measures are still being put in place.
What a beautiful morning and promises to be a beautiful day. I spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon tidying the garden, scrubbing down garden chairs and small table , and searching out the sun parasol as this afternoon we have our friends Wendy and Keith visiting.
Yesterday was also an morning art workshop with Jeremy Ford. It went well, picture to be included later. His next one is July but it clashes with my first hair appointment since the beginning of February. I know my priorities
This morning is online history, this evening is my late yoga class. My pilates/yoga teacher is disappointed that she cannot reopen on July 4 th but is already planning her future classes. She intends opening for only 6 people to attend but the classes will go out online so others can still do them. I am pleased about that. I actually enjoy doing the classes at home. No need to go out in all weathers, no hassle parking, are just a couple of the advantages. My history classes will also remain online in September.
The plans for July 4 th mean we will now be able to go and visit our daughter in Coventry, my disabled brother near Bradford, my sister in Liverpool, and my cousin. However We will not be going to Cardiff to my other brother there as it would need a hotel stay and at the moment that is a step too far I think. These are the people I write a daily blog to, like yourselves, but have not seen for many many months. Local friends will also feature on our visiting list in time, but we shall await the outcome of any repercussions.
The rest of my day will be pottering, sewing patchwork sat in the garden or tacking my jeans together to check for fit
Have a good day, enjoy the weather, stay safe.

You're being very sensible Sue and quite right. There is still a dangerous virus at large. In that respect I will be surprised if we don't see a rise in infections as restrictions are slackened.
I have ditched the shed this morning, partly because I needed to do an essentials shop at the Co-op (Milk salt and coffee mainly!) and on general grounds that hot weather like today can be just as dangerous for us oldies as any other sort of extreme weather. Over-cautious perhaps but that's what has got me this far! I like belt and braces thinking....

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
The special precautions at the dentists were quite rigorous. Only one patient allowed into the building at any one time, the appointments were spread out so patients never met. The outer door was locked between patients. Full gear worn by all staff plus partition screen for the controlling receptionist. Usual patient records and 'how are you keeping' questions plus a temperature check before seeing the dentist. Everything run to the book, quite impressed with the service.
Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
I always do my own research, that is actually the pleasure of the whole thing. If I receive information I check it out. Like you, according to my Maylard ancestors we are a family that died out in 1877 , they didn’t even have the correct wife for the man who died in Burnley leaving no children, he actually left a wife and three living children ( and 9 dead ones) one of whom was later the mother of my grandfather that went missing. I am still searching for him. When I found my Maylard family they were astounded I actually existed. my Dad and Mum are now buried in the same grave as this Maylard ancestor who died in 1877.Marilyn wrote: ↑23 Jun 2020, 09:41 Sue...one of my ancestors on Ancestry has “our Jane” living and dying within 12 months of her birth.
If you keep searching you will find it
