It's late. .

I notice, with some quiet satisfaction, that my picture of my chum, the surveillance camera somewhere above, has had over 160 views. Didn't expect that - though the nearby butterflies have always been popular. Got to musing that he might become a cult - like Henry the Hoover. I doubt it; but it kept me amused for a while. He's a 360Eye and very cheap, if anyone's interested. :laugh5:

I shall be in the shed later, I have decided not to fight the engine. It's going to a great grandchild and doesn't need to be a runner, so I shall rebuild it as a toy. I shall just have to try harder with the next one!

Morning

You aren’t supposed to survey other properties Stanley, this was explained to us when our cameras were fitted, I am not sure if it is illegal, but there are certainly restrictions on what you record, and what you do with it not sure of the details, but invasion of privacy and all that.

Its a nice morning, hopefully our drive south will be without event. I had a message yesterday from Laetitia to say she and one of her daughters are going in the house today to feather dust, hoover etc so when we arrive we are not faced with a lot of spiders webs and dead insects ((or mice ?) . So kind. We have enough medication with us to last two months should France be placed in Red and we stay and enough food in the freezer at home should we be in quarantine when we get back. I suspect neither will happen, I gather Boris had his hands slapped for the amber plus ruling and people were horrified to find that after booking holidays in good faith their return has become expensive and complicated . He has been told to keep it simple and various other comments. I shan’t get into politics but I do think this was all Brexit related .

Thats about it really. Early start, car to pack sandwiches to make for lunch. Hope to keep in contact in France but we only have a mobile internet and our phones now having cancelled the main router.

Have a good day

I've just come out of the shed Sue and I'm responding now in case I miss you. All the best for the trip and I hope you get a pleasant surprise and find you have a trouble free trip out.
I've finished the 10H engine and it's a runner but not up to my usual standards but it's going as a child's toy so I don't think there will be any complaints.....

Image

Here's the 10H ready to go to Burnley ready for the next Great Grandchild.

Image

I've unpacked the parts for the next engine, a Stuart No. 8. They look enormous!

You can have 'public' areas such as the footpath and road around your property in view and recorded, there is a requirement to display notices that CCTV is in use. I spoke to my neighbours, whose gardens are covered by the high level cameras at the front and rear, and they were more than happy.

Enjoy your time away in jolly old Francais.

Arrived in Portsmouth, good trip down. The ferry terminal is deserted. Had to show our vaccine passport with passports and tickets. We were advised to have a paper copy rather than use our phones to display things. Much easier and quicker, so it was no longer than a normal book in. Had a browse of the designer out let shops and had a beer sat in the sun, watching the world go by. Lovely sunny day here .

Yes Kev, our camera just shows our front drive, the pavement in front of us and a bit of next doors front but they were carefully positioned not to cover anything else. We had one chap called to see if we had his car being stolen , on our camera. We did not as it was out of our permitted viewing range.

Two hours to kill in the terminal, no cafe, no magazines in the shop. Thank goodness for ipads

I know it's different because It's quiet but that will mean less hassle and faster processing so it could be good. I hope it goes well this morning as you disembark. :biggrin2:
I've called the great grand daughter engine finished and have a bit of cleaning and tidying up to do. So I shall go in the shed and potter while I think. The new engine, a Stuart Number 8 is two and a half inches longer than the 10H. Not a lot but the castings look enormous! A bit easier I think. I shall try to overcome the effects of getting old! This will be a normal runner!
Later at 06:00. Sue, Just heard a prediction that the requirement to isolate on return for travellers to France is to be dropped.

Two hours in the shed and here we are at closing time, a lot of muck shifted and about 30 thou bigger than I need but at the moment it's very hot. I'll get a proper measurement and a finishing cut tomorrow when it has cooled down. A good morning and a good start on another build. In case you hadn't realised, I am chopping a crankshaft out of the solid.

Morning

No problems this morning, the usual queues for passport control, all dealt with efficiently. No checks on our baggage. We were in the local supermarket by 10.15 am and at the house by 11.00 am. Its been raining hard for days and more forecast. You can tell as the grass is very green and its normally brown at this time of year.

The garden is neat and tidy but I need to do plant gardening, ie pruning. As expected, the wisteria os doing an imitation of sleeping beauty, and we have more grapes than we have ever had . The fruit trees we pollarded last year are looking good and healthy.

The house has been hoovered, and spiders webs removed, I just have a bit of sweeping in the corners, but I am not complaining. We were greeted by flowers and a card on the table. How lucky we are to have such good neighbours. We have invited them for an English meal one evening, its the least we can do.

We are a bit disorientated as we can’t remember where things are. Just spent ages looking for the cutlery :laugh5:

Sue, looked at BBC news... "France no longer amber-plus as green list expands. Germany, Austria and Norway move to the green list under changes to the travel traffic light system. Published 1 hour ago".
A bit later.... From Sunday fully vaccinated UK citizens returning from France will not have to self isolate.

Morning

Thanks Stanley, just read that on the Manchester Evening News site. We can’t get BBC news online here, another NO PERMISSION. No doubt we will get a government update from the UK and another from France emailed to us within the nest 24 hours , and one from Brittany ferries. It is good news and we had sussed the way things would go correctly. So no isolation and only one test needed after our return , on day 2.

Its another damp cool day forecast, great for a bit of garden sorting. We wanted to get the wisteria done immediately as it was creeping under the eaves and into the bedroom through the window. I took three large buckets up stairs plus pruners and shears. I was able to remove most of it from inside tge bedroom window. There is a sturdy balcony that you can stand on and from there I was able to drag most of the long branches out of the roof. Bob did further along using a ladder. It was no more than a 30 minute job in the end could have been a major issue. I just have to vacuum up the debris left on the floor. I also did a bit of rose pruning but a couple have died. There are some enormous well rooted weeds, typical of marshy land. It shows how much rain they have had . More forecast for today and only 18 degrees.

In the last 24 hours we have been greeted with open arms. We have spent a couple of hours drinking coffee and chatting with laetitia and family, in the afternoon another hour with the lady across the road. We have often chatted but never been in her house before in 16 years. She was worried we were going to sell because of Brexit. What a lovely fun chat we had sat in her kitchen. Our spoken french is holding up better than expected. This afternoon Bobs engineer friend Bertrand and his wife Elisabeth (neighbours of Audrey who moved back to England ) are coming round for a cup of tea and we had only been here a couple of hours when we received an email from our English friends inviting us for a meal on Friday . We brought extra lateral flow tests with us as we knew there would be more socialising than we normally do so will be doing those regularly, starting today as Bertrand has chosen not to be vaccinated on health grounds. We dispute his logic but know him of old, a pessimistic hypochondriac I am afraid. Typical of many french!

So today is a bit more pruning, and visitors this afternoon. Have a good day everyone.

Good! If the wisteria is anything to go by you have quite a task before you!
I shall be quietly progressing my crankshaft but knocking off at 07:00 for early doors shopping. I had a request yesterday to make a steam engine for another grandson called Freddie.
It looks like a wet windy day coming so that might curtail the midday walk. Particularly sitting and surveilling the bookies.

Morning

It was a cool grey morning yesterday and by 11 was drizzling. We gave up at noon as the drizzle turned to full on rain . In the afternoon , before our friends arrived I dusted and polished the wood furniture, it all helps to eradicate the musty smell. Laetitia said she had not done that, but everything else is good, no cobwebs, spiders or dead flues, though Bob has found a few dead mice . Elisabeth and Bertrand stayed a couple of hours, and it was so nice to see them, after nearly 2 years

Today is supposed to be a bit warmer and drier and we may get more done, this evening we are at our English friends for a meal and a good long catchup. I think Stanley, you are right, the wisteria is indicative of the growth that has taken place but Yves has kept the lawns and main hedge cut as well as the shrubs in the Spring. The veggie plot was covered in groundsheets apart from the bit we planted last year, however it is all vastly overgrown, and even the ground sheets are covered. The flower borders have grown , spread, died back and regrown so all need a good prune. However there is no rush for any of these, it was the wisteria we were really worried about. The hydrangeas are magnificent and are benefitting from this damp weather, I must photograph them. Luckily the forecast for next week is in the lower 20s rather than 15 degrees, and the rainfall is down to 25 % instead of 90% . Its a good job I like gardening!

Yesterday I did manage to prune a lot of my roses and started cutting back the herb patch whilst Bob mowed the rough grass round his railway track and round the veggie garden to make them more accessible . I cut some of the long branches off the bay, luckily they were very soft wood so now it is a more manageable height for Bob to use the hedge trimmer should it ever be dry enough to use it! Today I hope to cut back the overgrown flower borders because in there I can see more roses and gladioli in flower. The vegetable garden tidying will have to wait till it is a bit drier as it is a hands and knees job. We did tackle a bit of it last night when I realised we had not bought potatoes when we shopped on our way here. I suddenly thought that if any potatoes had not been dug up last year by the neighbours some would have re grown this year and produced a crop. I was right, we found enough for tea, and I am sure there will be more if we can find the soil.

So the big tidy continues. Sounds energetic but there is a lot of chill out time too. We have no television as the satellite has changed and we need to reposition the dish. Bob tried yesterday and we managed to find SKY satellite. However nearly everything was a a channel that had to be paid for. We did find some free ones, ITV, several Religious channels and pop channels and one that we er ...flicked through rather quickly :laugh5: i did some of my embroidery whilst Bob was outside in the drizzle testing the dish for possible signals. I like to keep my supervision of such jobs, warm and dry. At least we managed to get our old CD player and ipods to work so there is some evening entertainment .

Have a good day, hope the weather is not too bad.

Sounds like a busy time, glad you have time to chill out. The Astra (Sky) satellite array should give you plenty of free channels, I presume your dish can 'see' that one where you are.

We were on Astra 2A and 2B but it has changed to D and E but we can’t find it. Bob has scanned but can’t identify it. Most just have scrambled channels . We bought this dish because it was supposed to receive British and French TV, we have only ever managed British. Last night we had lots of Asian channels. Bob says thanks for the link, he had a look, we are on Hotbird at the moment . Means nothing to me
