The same for several million of us. My annual 'cost' is under the cap, as is yours, so it wouldn't make a difference anyway.

That comment I think was directed to Pluggy, but...Mrs Tiz has got a quote from Octopus and the figures are good compared with EDF. If we sign up with them how do we bring about the £50 deal via Tripps or Panbiker?

To get the benefit as I understand it you must be referred by an existing customer. Ian is on holiday s at the moment, and I don't want to do it. I'm sure he will oblige.

I'll sent you a PM with an example.

Indeed, just got back this afternoon and have been playing catch up. I will PM you the link Tiz if you want to give it a go, as Tripps says changing is pretty painless. Octopus were voted the best energy supplier now for the last two years.

I note that Offgen is asking some very pointed questions about the power outages which affected so many people yesterday. We were lucky of course and never had any problem. It reminds us how fragile our systems are, transport and hospitals were affected.
There is also the small matter of the fact that one of the emergency generators at Ipswich Hospital failed to start. I fear the maintenance department will be under fire and quite right too!
Some explanations are being revealed about the causes of the power failures. It appears that two generators, a wind farm offshore at Hornsea and a gas fired station at Little Barford failed almost simultaneously and the grid couldn't cope. Doesn't say much for resilience... The hospital generator failure is thought to be because of a software fault. Hadn't it been tested regularly?

The National Grid man said the two power stations shut down to ensure safety. J. Humphrys asked `the safety of who or what?'. The NG man said `To protect the rest of the network, or they could go down like dominoes'. That doesn't bear thinking about!

Power outages. But why? What caused the wind farm to disconnect? (It looks as though the gas fired station failure was another software fault.) The system must be running on a knife edge.

We have another cool day, only 8C tonight.... I am expecting the CH to kick in again briefly. Not high summer!
Later.... I was right, low level of heat in the radiators.

Without doing an in depth study my rule of thumb for winter heating is £1 per day per radiator. Bugger the cost, why should we freeze just to leave it to someone to buy a new ipad?

Our CH kicked in for the first time on thermostat last night as well, balance radiator in the bathroom gave it away.

I do agree with you P. I never worry about the fact that the CH looks after me, that's its function. All that interests me is whether I can pay the bill. However, heat in August is a bit unusual.

The boiler kicked in again this morning but only briefly. The thermostat is over twenty years old but still functions perfectly. I love common accessories like that which just go on and on and on....

It always was. That's why power stations were sited in cities and had no cooling towers. The exhaust steam from the turbines was used for district heating. New York was a big fan, that's why steam rising from short ventilation chimneys placed over manholes was an iconic site there, they were venting the tunnels that contained the distribution pipes. Combined Heat and Power principle allied to heat pumps. Remember, energy can't be destroyed, only dissipated.

It's choices Kev. I like to know I am paid up. I score in the summer so it actually doesn't make any difference.

I just find it easier to keep tabs on the household budget, the direct debit/dual fuel deal gives me a £100 annual discount too.

Do you use DD to pay? Does the discount apply?
