Good evening. I am moving in soon to the town which I love very much. I’m a very young 70 and enjoy meeting people, computers, history, art, craft, gardening, socialising etc. Not too much walking but with my new rescue dog coming in January I know there are a lot of dog owners to meet. I shall be living with my friend and partner but I am retired and he still works. I’m interested in learning still so much about life her in UK. I have lived and travelled overseas for some 40 years, mostly Asia. I hope to have the opportunity of meeting you all at times. Happy Christmas. My new kitchen is not finished by our builder so I have had to delay moving in for another week.

Watch out for a man with a black Patterdale dog. Wanders about Barlick in the early mornings. Can be a bit aggressive. But the dogs OK.

Newbie18 is one of the accounts I had to activate manually. We did the explanation exchanges via Facebook in this instance. I am aware of Newbies name but have consciously not used it. Personal attribute and up to the user themselves.

You can visit any of the forums and threads on the site. You can browse directly from the index page selecting the topics or areas you are interested in. Other browsing options can be found in the "Quick Links" drop down which can be found at the top left of the index page. There are various options in here. You can also bookmark individual topics using the tools below the editor box. Middle button on your mouse can be very useful for opening choices in new tabs.

This announcement sticky has more details on the options.

Browsing Options for the Site

As a member you can contribute or comment on any of the topics that you access.

If you click on the small arrow icon to the right of the posters username it will take you directly to the latest post in the thread. Click on the title of the topic and it will take you to the start.

If you want to start a new topic in a forum just select "New Topic" then give it a name and add your post, same as you did here in Introductions. It is good practice to see if a suitable topic already exists if you have a particular subject in mind. Just find a suitable forum from the index page and post away, we welcome new topics or any contributions to the existing ones.

Anna! Lovely, I feel so much more connection with a name.... Ian's instructions are absolutely correct but all you have to do is click on 'Post a reply' in a topic that interests you, type your response and then click 'submit'. You can't possibly find all the interesting things on the site straight off. Just plunge in and it will all slowly reveal itself.... We will all look after you! Enjoy it, that's why we are here......
If you ask Ian he will tell you how you can change the Newbie label......

Unfortunately Anna the username you registered with cannot be changed. As administrator I can change just about every other aspect of a users account but not the name.

There are a couple of options with the account though.

1. Leave it as it is and add your name and any other information you may need into a signature. This will append to each if your posts in the footer. You do that with the options in the user control panel.

2. Re-register with a new username. The registration will not allow you to use the same email address though for another account.

Option 1 may well be the best, as you are shortly to become a new resident in the town I can see the logic in your choice of name.

Wow, what an exciting life, Anna. I was married to a Chinese lady from Kuantan on the East coast of Malaysia and have visited there several times. I went to Hong Kong last June and was shocked how much it has changed, especially the prices, they are sky high now. It used to be my favourite city but not any more.
All he best for Christmas and the new year.

I see you have mastered including a quote in another thread Anna and setting up a signature, well done.

For images you have to upload them to the gallery first before you can insert them in posts. The Gallery can be accessed via the link to the right of your username and is organised in albums of interest etc. Once you have uploaded your image(s) to the gallery you can include them in posts using the URL string generated for each image. It sounds complicated but it's not bad once you have mastered the technique. When the site was moved to this platform I created the topic below for notes on image inclusion. If you read through this it gives some useful information. The first post is most relevant since the last upgrade to the site software and gallery.

The thing to do is to try it, you can't break anything! and as with anything else on the site just ask if you get stuck.

Anna, if you were asking me.... (Good to put the name of the person you're talking to in the post sometimes....) Yes, I have been in the area since I came out of the army in 1956 and have been in Barlick (That's what the locals call Barnoldswick) since 1959.... I take it KL is Kuala Lumpur? It would be too hot for me as well. How are you getting on with the cold? Are you in Barlick now?
In case you're wondering, I have got up early all my life so I inhabit a different time zone to everyone else! I always have a sleep in the afternoon. Yes, you're right, I'm slightly peculiar!

No Stanley I do not believe you to be peculiar. Each to their own I say. Which regiment were you in, my Father was in the Cheshire Regiment that is how we managed to travel overseas as kids.
I am moving in as soon as the builders have finished my kitchen. Overdue I may add. I live near the new so called ALDI. Should be there in a couple of weeks.
It seems icy today so stay safe.

I think we have a fairly even balance of male and female regular posters Anna. There are no individual groups as such just the forum with all it's diverse topics. We have quite a few genealogist members. Gloria, Wendy and Sue for starters. Quite a few of our male members and a few women also follow the engineering and other craft topics. Walking and other outdoor pursuits captivate others. We have quite a few members who are into local history and the like. I enjoy amateur radio and other technical topics, I know a few follow the posts in those threads. We are a broad church so to say and have members around the world, a few are ex pats now living down under or like Chinatyke, well, China! Stanley reckons that there is no topic that we can't get our teeth into due to the mix of skills and experiences our members have. :biggrin2: I'm sure with your globe trotting we have just inherited a bit more.

Oh, you don't need to sign your posts if you have put a signature in your user control panel.

There are a few of us around Anna, as Ian says we don't have groups as such but follow those topics we find interesting. If you click on Quick Links in the top left hand corner and then Active Topics it brings up all the topics most recently commented on no matter which forum they originate in. Everyone has there own way of accessing the site but I find this the most straightforward. You don't miss anything!

We have a connection Anna. I was with the 22nd of Foot, The Cheshire Regiment from 1954 to 1956 for National Service. We spent most of that time in Berlin....
