Hi everyone,
I am a new member and trying to locate the parents of my 3rd Great Grandfather Philip Harrison born in 1807 in Swinden near Gisburn, moved to Elslack near Broughton (1841) Census. Then lived ,worked as a Butcher and died (1867) in Barnoldswick in Monk Cottages.
Can anyone please help.

Hello Ighten and welcome to the site.
There is a family tree on Ancestry which has Philip Harrison, born about 1773 died 1841, and Elizabeth or Betty Pickhaver as Philip's parents. They married in Long Preston in 1804. Not sure how accurate it is, but they are in Elslack from about 1817 onwards after having children in Swinden & Bank Newton.

I have a 249 page file going back to 1600s on Gisburn areas Harrison ancestors but can find no Philip in it.

There are land tax records for Philip Harrison in Elslack from 1817 onwards, and he appears in the Poll books from 1832 to 1840 at Low Ground Farm in Elslack. Philip and Betty are at Low Ground Farm in the 1841 census but he died in December 1841 and was buried at Gisburn Church on December 21st 1841. The Burial Register describes him as Philip Harrison of Elslack aged 68.
The family tree on Ancestry has Joseph Harrison b 1804 as Philip & Betty's first child. There is a baptism record for a Joseph Harrison at Wilsden Independent Low Chapel near Bradford from 30th August 1804 which seems a bit strange, but he is the son of Philip & Betty Harrison of Goosener nr Swinden.
That places them in Swinden so it seems highly likely that they were your Philip's parents too.
There are still Harrison's at Low Ground Farm, unless the latest landlords of the Elslack Estate have terminated their tenancy, which is what I have heard they are trying to do with other estate farms.

Are the owners of the Elslack Estate the Duckworth's, I seem to remember that name a long way back. It was J J Duckworth then, a cotton manufacturer.

That's right Stanley, the Duckworths bought the estate from the Lane Fox family in 1928 and ran it until 2016 when it went on the market. It is now owned (I think) by a property company in London who are trying to get the tenants out of the farms, where some of them have farmed for generations. They only have short term leases, so no security of tenure, and I believe there are court cases ongoing. The owners want to convert the buildings to maximise profits.

That's bloody terrible isn't it. A humane system would step in and ban such greedy behaviour.

It's awful I hope the courts support the tenant farmers.
I've just checked and it doesn't look as if Low Ground Farm is part of the Estate now, though the Harrisons paid their land tax to the Fox family back in the early 19th Century.

Thanks Wendyf for your efforts. I think all your information so far is from my own ancestry tree. I have made a few assumptions on the way (I know you shouldn't do this) but there is a lot of clues that Philip Senior is Phillip Juniors Father. I won't rest until I have proof. Drives you crackers.

I thought it might be! I never trust trees on Ancestry until I've double checked the facts, yours seems fairly comprehensive.

It looks like the Harrisons of Swinden had strong links to Independent Chapels, including Horton in Craven and Wilsden.
