Try Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.

I've just heard Johnson say that they are 'surging' border control staff into areas where they are needed.
Our response is pathetic and it's obvious from citizen reports that people are being turned back or told to apply for visas in the normal way.....

Try Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.

Well that's three years of Latin up the spout. Always knew it would be though. :biggrin2:

With so much about Ukraine going on we've resorted to listening to old episodes of our favourite Radio 4 programmes, such as `Word of Mouth'. Michael Rosen is so easy to listen to and the sound quality is much better than we've had since the pandemic began. We've just listened to the October 2017 episode on `Pub Names'. It's wonderful and there's so much interesting (and often amusing) information squeezed into 30 minutes, much more than what you often get in an hour of TV. Here's the link: Pub Names And there's about 200 more episodes!

That's an interesting comment about sound quality Peter. How can a recording be better than a direct broadcast?

Have we ever looked at 'traipsing'? Here's what I found....
"1590s, of uncertain origin, perhaps from dialectal French trepasser "pass over or beyond," from Old French trespasser "cross, traverse, transgress" (see trespass). Or from a source related to Middle Dutch trappen, dialectal Norwegian trappa "to tread, stamp" (see trap (n.)). Liberman points out that it resembles German traben "tramp" "and other similar verbs meaning 'tramp; wander; flee' in several European languages. They seem to have been part of soldiers' and vagabonds' slang between 1400 and 1700. In all likelihood, they originated as onomatopoeias and spread to neighbouring languages from Low German." Related: Traipsed; traipsing.

I came across a new word yesterday but didn't find where the name originated. Have a look at 'bishoping'.

That's an interesting one. On the one hand it means a rite of co0nsecration and on the other it means having white shoulder flashes. All I could find was origin unknown and one definition dates first example as 1590.

I came across the word because a young friend of mine bought a coloured horse at the weekend that had suffered from that practice. You wouldnt dream it was still happening. She has learnt a big lesson!

This was a young lass Stanley not even 18 . Every trick in the book and my quite experienced friend was taken in....the modern way of buying and selling using facebook. She was going to collect the horse from Leeds and check it out before paying but the girl said she had transport coming in this direction and they would deliver giving time to trot it up etc . When it arrived there was no time to hang around, just hand over the cash and the driver was away. No passport, no microchip, and a permanently damaged fetlock. The poor mare is probably nearer 20 than the advertised 10 years and struggling to eat because of its filed down teeth.

That's diabolical treatment of a horse, Wendy. Sad to know it still goes on.

This morning I see a BBC report starting: The shuttering of independent media outlets... Are we now going to see shutting replaced by shuttering? Why do people choose longer words? I was always taught to opt for the shortest word.

The ignorant buggers think it gives statements more impact if they use long, unusual or made-up words.
That's why in government statements every noun has to have a qualifier.... 'World beating', 'massive', record-breaking' etc.
Add verbing nouns to the list and then forget I said it!

Easy to be wise after the event, but a shocking story nevertheless. Best read the words of caution on the likes of ebay and Gumtree

Uncertain at the moment Tripps, she's trying to establish if the horse is in constant pain and will be getting Xrays done of the deformed fetlock. If there is a possibility the horse would happily live as a companion then that's a possibility though she won't leave my friend's ownership. What makes the decision even harder is that she is a lovely natured old girl who loves a cuddle and has been trained to offer a 'paw' for a treat just like my Sparky.

Did she buy it to ride or to just have as a pet?

I'm guessing she does not have the seller's name and address, and a receipt for the money.

Perhaps traceable via Facebook, or local Trading Standards - or even the Police.

She was buying it to bring back into work and sell on. It was sold as a 10 year old ride and drive horse that had just foaled. ( The vet said it looked as if an oversized foal had been 'ripped' out of her.) No receipt and the adverts have disappeared. Though the girl still has 2 Facebook pages there are no hints of an address anywhere. I've been searching electoral rolls for her family but can't find anything. She has been reported to trading standards as has the transport company, who shouldn't have done the job without a passport and microchip number. As I said my friend is experienced in buying and selling horses, it's her business and she is mortified that she fell for it. However, it has prevented the poor thing being moved on yet again, as she will be euthanized or very well kept as a pet.

I don't know where I picked up 'coper' David, probably at a market.
What a terrible story about the old horse, there are some callous buggers out there..... I can't get my head round the reason for cruelty like that.

I've noted shuttering used today in connection with McDonalds closing in Russia. I think I might let them off, as (for me) it implies a temporary rather than a permanent situation. Let's hope so anyway.

I think I heard that report as well David and noted shuttering.
I understand your point of view but overall I always prefer the shorter version of a word as people comprehend short better than long when reading.
