A guy on a phone-in blamed Blair for changing society. He said he turned the 'working class' into middle class by expanding university admissions, and imported a new 'working class' from eastern Europe. A generalisation, but on track I'd say.

If what I see on TV is any guide the existing 'working class' are stealing cars and dealing 'weed' .

Not sure if the mechanism was as simple as that David but essentially true in that Blair had no connection with or respect for what we understood to be the 'working class' and smokestack industry and the manufactures. Both he and Thatcher thought you could run an economy without adding value to raw materials. They encouraged these 'dirty' jobs to migrate. We can all think of examples starting with plastic waste, recycling lead acid batteries and ship-breaking and moving through to high end technologies like Dyson. Problem was they couldn't export the workers with the jobs so they had to pay benefits to support them in the brave new world they created.

One of Labour's problems is that it still refers to people as workers or working class. British people don't want to be called that, it's like telling them they belong in the 19th Century. They want to be recognised as bright and able individuals, able to set up their own businesses, go to university, be successful. They see `workers and working class' as people slaving down the pits and dying in their 30s of occupational diseases.

True Peter. The vast amount of skill involved in manufacturing industry had lip service paid to it occasionally but was never properly recognised or rewarded. The nearest quote I can remember on this subject was what one of Maudslay's workmen said about him after he died.
"It was a pleasure to watch Mr Maudslay with a hand tool of any description but he was exceptionally fine with an 18" flat file."

My contender for Quote of the Day is the news reader on the 20:00 news on BBC last night. He totally mispronounced anonymous. It came out as separate syllables all with equal stress 'a-non-ee-mouse'.

Dominic Cummings

I think the Health Secretary should have been fired on multiple occasions for lying.

Not verbatim as he's still speaking. Dynamite. . . . :surprised:

The more I see of him, the more I agree. I think he just sees things as they are, and I don't think he is capable of telling other than the truth. That's refreshing.

Do you think Boris Johnson is a fit and proper person to lead us out of this pandemic?

Cummings "No".

A good example of the sort of trite opinion our 'opinion formers' are allowed to get away with David. It always did have a very loaded meaning, depending on who was using it.

Talking of discrimination I'm glad to see that many of the big organisations that signed up (£2000 each) to a Stonewall scheme supporting folk who `cancel' or `de-platform' speakers at universities are now rushing for the exit. They've finally realised that they're supporting suppression of freedom of speech. It's not just commercial organisations either, it includes government departments (DVLA for example) and - wait for it - even the Human Rights & Equalities Commission. It makes you wonder if they ever look to see who they're giving money to. I'm all for the work Stonewall has done to get gays and lesbians accepted but they've now moved on to the trans debate and want to `cancel' people like JK Rowling who urge a common sense approach to sex and gender.

I was getting at the fact that once it was a compliment to be described as having discrimination, and implied the highest possible 'good taste'. That meaning seems to have been totally forgotten now.

Lord Frost on the NI Protocol in the FT, quoted on the BBC News web page: "The EU needs a new playbook for dealing with neighbours, one that involves pragmatic solutions between friends, not the imposition of one side's rules on the other and legal purism."

Another example of the Brexiteers saying `It's only a legal requirement we agreed on, just ignore it.'

The EU have already proposed that if the UK signs up to their food standards then 90% of the paperwork would not be required. Johnson has said he would meet all their food standards but won't sign up to them. I wonder why.??

Well put - and it's a shame. All discrimination is now automatically evil, and related
to race and gender.

On N.I. - as I understand it - they are not permitted to import English sausages as no EU country is allowed to do that. However they are not in fact an 'EU country'. Ask that Mr Poots - he'll tell you.

Not only that but the UK are in charge of all border controls governing imports / exports from the UK to NI. Mr Poots won't fund the NI part and Johnson is dragging his feet on the UK part and both are blaming the EU for being unreasonable.

I don't think taking sausages to Belfast is an 'export'. A bit like 'exporting' to say Leeds. It's all in the same country. I find myself strangely relaxed about all aspects of sausages in Northern Ireland. Why not make their own?

All this nonsense could be made to go away if we just rejoined the EU! I assume there will be a period of penance to pay for our audacity in leaving. Maybe just long enough for ALL the chickens to come home to roost, including the ones that no one knows about yet or the realisation hasn't dawned. Is there a set time for the punishment?

I seem to remember our good friend Richard telling us many years ago that Ireland was the problem and when the shit hit the fan we would blame the EU. He got it in one.
Ken is on the money. The Tories gave the contract for all the veterinary inspections to one firm, who have been very slow for some reason, perhaps connected with government funding to put the facilities for complying with the regulations we agreed to being held back.
