Do they really class not bidding enough as not 'winning'? I knew that auctioneers like to engender competition in the sale room, didn't realise Ebay do the same thing.

General de Gaulle 1963 -
"England in effect is insular, she is maritime, she is linked through her exchanges, her markets, her supply lines to the most diverse and often the most distant countries; she pursues essentially industrial and commercial activities, and only slight agricultural ones....In short, the nature, the structure, the very situation that are England's differ profoundly from those of the continentals."

Heather, mine come mainly from memory but I check them in 'Stephenson's Quotations' or the Oxford Book of quotations. Both published after 16th C.

Re - authenticity

The first post is from the autobiography of one Margaret Roberts, whilst the second - I heard him say it on the television.
I don't want to spoil it if you haven't read the book, but it's quite interesting - I'm up to Ch 3, and she' just met this chap called Dennis - looks quite promising.....

Er, people have twigged that the authenticity/internet/Leonardo thing was, like, ironic ... haven't they? It's just that someone accused me of being pompous till I pointed out that tinterweb wasn't invented when Leonardo was quoted as saying it wasn't authentic... kinda spoils the joke when you have to explain it! :disappointed: :disappointed:

It's OK Heather, we are watching and enjoying your posts, even when they are misattributed - everyone knows it was William Shakespeare of Stratford and not some pasta-eating Italian.

Florence Green, who was the oldest living veteran of World War 1 and had been in the Women's Royal Air Force in 1918, died earlier this month, just short of her 111th birthday. Asked what it was like to be 110, she replied: "Not much different from 109".

Tardis - that Oscar Wilde quote is superb! The man was a genius.

Not quite in the same league but I heard this on Emmerdale t’other day:

Queen Elizabeth I on the Catholic/Protestant issue...
"I have no desire to make windows into men's souls"
Quoted this morning on Radio 4 in a debate between Richard Dawkins and Giles Fraser on the current fuss over new research suggesting Britons who declare themselves Christian display low levels of belief and practice. The survey was conducted for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
